Seth Cherry Obituary

WASHINGTON, N.C. - Mr. Seth Bridgeman Cherry, 81, a resident of 820 Mill Road in the Old Ford Community, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.
Funeral services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at Paul Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. David Linton and D.J. Maxey officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Chester Allamon, Keith Waters, Mike Greene, Bobby Silverthorne, William Brett Cherry and Christian Waters will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Cherry was born in Beaufort County on Jan. 6, 1931. He was the son of the late Amacy C. Cherry and Jessie Jackson Cherry. Mr. Cherry was a graduate of Washington High School and played football, which included an undefeated season under the legendary Coach Choppy Wagner. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Cherry was a member of H Company Regimental Combat Team of the 25th Infantry. He earned the United States Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, National Defense Service medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He also served in the Headquarters Battery 295th Field Artillery of the National Guard. Mr. Cherry was proud of his military service.
Mr. Cherry retired from the Shift Service Maintenance Department of TexasGulf. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, the American Legion, the Horse Pen Swamp Hunting Club and a former member of the Old Ford Volunteer Fire Department. In his spare time, Mr. Cherry loved to garden, hunt and fish. He was known to many as the "Collard Man."
On May 27, 1955, Mr. Cherry married the former Alice Meekins, who survives.
Surviving with his wife are his children, Beverly C. Allamon and husband, Chester, of Greenville, William B. Cherry and wife, Connie, of Washington and Russell C. Cherry of Washington; his grandchildren, Karen S. Waters and husband, Keith, William Brett Cherry and wife, Agnieszka, Sara C. Jensen and husband, Charles, Amanda C. Ross and husband, Chad, and April C. Cherry; great-grandchildren, Jalynne Waters, Christian Waters and Khloe M. Jensen; and his sisters, Hazel Clark of Greenville, Mildred Jackson and husband, Danny, of New Bern, Ann Greene of Jackson, Ohio, and Faye Warner and husband, Jimmie, of Washington. He also was preceded in death by two brother-in-laws, J.T. Greene and Thurman Clark.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Paul Funeral Home in Washington.
