Ward Doub Obituary

Ward Davis Doub, 85, of 4721 Seward Road in Pfafftown died on Wednesday, March 7, 2007. A celebration of life service with full military honors will be held on Saturday at noon at Doubs Chapel United Methodist Church at 5591 Seward Road in Pfafftown. The Rev. Richard Patzfahl and the Rev. Dwight Cartner will preside. The body will be placed in the church at 11:30 a.m. Mr. Doub was born Dec. 11, 1921 in the Baltimore Community of Yadkin County to Sanford Lafayette Doub and wife, Sarah Ella Davis Doub. He was a member of the U.S. Navy Patrol Bombing Squadron VPB-106. His crew was assigned to fly bombing and surveillance missions in the South Pacific. He was awarded the U.S. Navy Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as a Co-Pilot of a Patrol Bomber Plane for contributing "materially to the success of his plane and the infliction of extensive damage on enemy shipping during offensive patrols and strikes in the vicinity of Borneo, Indo China, and the Japanese Mainland. His courage and devotion to duty in the face of hostile antiaircraft fire and serial opposition were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service." He was a member of the East Bend American Legion. Mr. Doub was employed for 31 years by Piedmont Airlines and retired as Captain in 1981. Mr. Doub was a member of Doubs Chapel United Methodist Church. He served on the Administrative Board and served as Chairman. He was most interested in the history and genealogy of the Doub family. He was Chairman of the committee to establish a permanent memorial to the founder of Doubs Church, the Rev. John Doub, who was the first Doub to immigrate to America in 1773. Mr. Doub was an avid gardener. He enjoyed sharing the vegetables from his garden with his friends and neighbors. For a number of years, he raised Black Angus cattle. He was an athlete who very much enjoyed the competition and camaraderie developed over his years of playing tennis. Mr. Doub was predeceased by his parents; and two sisters, Queen Inez Doub Phillips of Midland and Jennie Louella Doub Cornelius of Winston-Salem. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Betty Jean Doub; son, Judge Randy Davis Doub and wife, Toni Susan Pegg Doub, and grandsons, Alexander Wade Davis Doub and Jameson Anthony Edward Doub of Greenville; daughter, Sara Jo Doub Cox and husband, Edgar Lee Cox Jr., and granddaughters, Allison Renee Cox and Robin Marie Cox of Dover, Del.; daughter, Leigh Ann Doub Smith of Winston-Salem; sister, Martha Pearl Doub Logan of East Bend; and many loving nieces and nephews.
