John Pettit Obituary
He was born May 28, 1979, in Galesburg, Illinois, to John and Gerri (Barton) Pettit II.
He is survived by his wife, Christy, and one son, Liam, of Fayetteville; his parents; two sisters, Tamera (Guillermo) Romo of Hohenfels, Germany, and Meika Pettit of Elmwood; three nephews, Connor, Scott, and Memin; and three nieces, Lexi, Ellie, and Angela.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Kimi; and one grandpa, John Pettit I.
John graduated from Elmwood High School in 1997. He then entered the Army, becoming a Sergeant First Class in the Army Special Forces, where he served his country proudly with three tours in Afghanistan. He received many awards, including the Audie Murphy Award, and was also recognized by the City of Fayetteville Commerce. He retired in August 2014.
Cremation rights have been accorded. Military recognition will be bestowed on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, at the JFK Chapel. A memorial service will then be held at noon on Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Elmwood, where a visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to the time of service. Burial of ashes will follow at the Elmwood Township Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be made to the Elmwood Educational Foundation and Wounded Warriors. Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Elmwood is in charge of arrangements.

My heart is shattered. I worked with John at the RoadHouse and he was a familiar friendly face while I worked at Jordan's Mobil. He always had the biggest smile. To Geri, John, and the girls...I am praying for your comfort during this sad time.
