Andrew Gomez Obituary
Andrew always said that his most rewarding experience in life was raising his two children. In addition to spending time with his family and friends, Andrew had many passions. He loved playing golf with his friends at the Canaan Country Club and the Sunday golf crew. His other passion was Dean College where he served on the Board of Trustees for the past nine years. His faith in God brought him the Gideon's organization where he had been a member for the past 25 years. Andrew had an amazing zest for life and always praised God for his many blessings. Ask anyone who knew him and you will hear tales of Andy's exuberant personality displayed in a number of ways – doing back-flips at the drop of a hat, breaking into an Elvis song whenever or wherever the urge struck, and telling animated stories of his time as the "disco cop" directing traffic on Cape Cod. Andy shared his enthusiasm for sports by devoting countless hours of his time to youth sports programs coaching baseball and basketball in Norfolk, Gilbert football and a summer high school basketball program. In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his daughter, Chelsea Gomez Starkowski, and his son, Ryan Gomez who will proudly continue their father's tradition of serving his customers. He is also survived by his son-in-law Anthony Starkowski, loved-like-a son Nik Karbelnikoff and his granddogs, Bella and Bubba. Additional survivors include his father, David Gomez, Sr.; his siblings, Timothy Gomez, David (Juno) Gomez, Jr., Dennis Gomez, Dwain Gomez, Aaron Gomez, Monica Gomez Chambrello, Greg Gomez, Tammy Gomez; and many loving friends. He was predeceased by his mother Luella Gomez.
A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, September 8th at the Second Congregational Church in Winsted, CT. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Andy may be directed to the Andy Gomez '76 Memorial Scholarship Fund at Dean College. Gifts are welcome online at www.dean.edu/give or make checks payable to Dean College and send to the Office of Institutional Advancement, 99 Main Street, Franklin, MA 02038.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Center for Cancer Care in Torrington and the ICU at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for their compassionate care during the past month. Barbara, Chelsea and Ryan, so sorry for your loss. I am thinking back 45 yrs ago when I was in school with Andy. Such a funny guy and always caring. We were in school together until we graduated. We were in Variety shows where he was Elvis, and some of us girls were the screaming fans. Oh, yes his back flips were amazing. I always wanted to pop in and say hi when I visited my mom but always kept putting it off. We have to remember now, to always go with your feelings at that time, and don't put things off. I met Chelsea when she worked with us at Cigna. Andy, you and Barbara did good.. she is a wonderful person as I am sure Ryan is also. He will be missed everyday, but remembered for so many things that he accomplished. Andy, hang onto those, "Blue Suede Shoes"...

Andy was the cousin closest in age to me, and I will miss his zest and enthusiasm. Being a part of the only family to move away from Vermont made it difficult to have the kind of relationship I would have enjoyed, but anyone who knew him would have to see him for the special person he was. Andrew was the disco cop and how we loved watching him. He had such an audience, always of people who enjoyed his antics. As our insurance agent, we couldn't have asked for a more experienced and great guy. Prayers for your family, he will certainly be missed, but his life will be remembered by so many people.
