Edward Barber Obituary
Ed attended Torrington Schools and entered the U.S. Air Force where he was stationed in Topeka, Kansas. In 1963, Ed joined the Torrington Fire Department, retiring as Lieutenant in 1988. Ed and his brother David owned and operated the Moosehead Tavern in the north end of Torrington for several years. Even though Ed retired to Florida, he was always proud to call Torrington his home.
As a young boy, Ed was a member of the first Little League Baseball team in the City of Torrington, and also played semi professional basketball. He was a member of the Forester's and Torrington Lodge of Elk's, where he was an active participant in their golf and bowling leagues. A true sports enthusiast and exceptional athlete, Ed was a regular at the noon hour basketball games at the YMCA, as well as an umpire for men's softball in Torrington for many years. He shared his devotion to the St. Louis Cardinal's with his brother David.
In addition to his wife Barbara, he is survived by three daughters, Shelli Noreika and husband Tom, Julie Rooney and husband Tom and Leslie Barber all of Torrington, grandchildren Garrett, Dustin and Rebecca Waldron and Victoria and Thomas Edward Rooney, stepson Scott Morcaldi and partner Leslie Bernauer, step-daughter Kristen Elkins and husband Michael and their son Evan. He also leaves his sisters, Mary Jane Calnan, Ginny Maraia and husband Joe and sister-in-law Catherine Barber, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Sally Gautieri and brother David Barber.
A ceremony to Celebrate Ed's Life will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Elk's Lodge in Torrington.

I was saddened to learn of Eddie's passing. He was one of the good guys to play with and against in the rec leagues around Torrington. A great fan and competitor. And I shall always remember his kindness upon my mother's passing. Sincere condolences to the entire Barber family.

Very sorry to hear of Ed's passing. I knew Ed from my firefighting days at Torringford Vol Fire Dept. He was one heck of a strong and determined firefighter. When I was elected Chief of Torringford, Ed was the first from "downtown" to call and congratulate me. We got along very well in those days of career / volunteer relationships. Sincere condolences to the family.

My Dad and Eddy served for years together at the TFD. As a kid I looked up these guys, especially Eddy. To me Eddy was larger than life, a mans man. Althought I haven't seen him in years, I'll miss him. Just knowing Eddy no longer walks this earth saddens me. Go in peace my friend.

John and I just got home from NY to,learn of Ed's passing. We so wanted to see him last week but were caught up in our getting ready for our trip. It had been so great to see him when we did.
