Walter B. Nielsen passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Walter was born on May 17, 1946 in Hartford. He spent most of his younger years in Portland; grew up in Middletown attending St. John's Catholic School and graduating Woodrow Wilson High School in 1964. Soon after graduation he entered the Air Force and specialized in telecommunications. He served in the Vietnam War, stationed in Thailand. He married Kathy Wojtowicz and had two children, Joseph Nielsen and Michelle Sattler. He furthered his education at Middlesex Community College. Almost all of his career was spent in the telecommunications field, working for AT&T, Connecticut National Bank, Union Carbide, and Executone Business Solutions. Twenty-eight years ago, he married Lynda Bednar Nielsen. They shared many adventures together including flying on the weekends in his Piper Cherokee 180 out of Brainard Field and later Waterbury-Oxford. He loved to watch his son play soccer, his daughter perform in the band, his grandchildren's sports, dance, and music activities. For the past 11 years, he enjoyed the camaraderie of his many friends and staff at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Pulmonary Rehab. He leaves his wife, Lynda; his daughter Michelle Sattler, husband Tad, grandsons David and Joshua; his son Joseph, wife Carolyn, grandchildren Cameron and Hannah; his sister Patricia Nielsen; brother Robert Nielsen; his stepdaughter Celina; stepson Bradley Bednar; several nieces and nephews. He has been predeceased by his parents Rhoda and Walter Nielsen and brother, Richard Nielsen. A visitation will be held on Monday, February 4, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. at Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main St. South, Southbury. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main St. South in Southbury.
