Arthur Golden Obituary

Arthur M. Golden, 93, of Eugene, Oregon passed away peacefully on March 31, 2016 in his home. Family, dear friends and loving caregivers surrounded him in last days.

He was born on November 18, 1922 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Mollie Goldman Golden and Barnett Golden.

Arthur spent most of his professional career as a Realtor in Utica, New York. He moved to Oregon in 1980.

Arthur enriched the lives of many people. He had a charismatic personality and was very engaging. He could easily energize others and give them hope and a sense of possibility. He was a Flying Tiger in WWII. The impact of this war was one of this last memories and the question he could never resolve is, "Why war?" An active member of AA he enjoyed 63 years of sobriety and sponsored many other people. His closest friends are those that he sponsored and they remained devoted to him throughout his life. Arthur believed deeply that education was the great equalizer and devoted much time to volunteering in public schools. He loved teaching the joy of reading to students and worked on two school bond campaigns. He loved going to student performances! He was known for his practical jokes and quick wit. Arthur was committed to a healthy life-style and started running marathons when he was 50. Once his car broke down on the way to a marathon and he ran 21 miles to the marathon and then 26 miles to complete the marathon. Dad was devoted to finding a cure for Fanconi Anemia and volunteered many hours for the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund. Arthur loved the arts and each Eugene Symphony Concert was a magical experience for him.

Arthur is survived by his three daughters: Nancy Golden, Sue Cramer and Rose Golden, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Donations in honor of Arthur can be made to the Fanconi Anemia Fund at 1801 Willamette #200, Eugene, Oregon 97401 or Springfield Education Foundation at 525 Mill St., Springfield, Oregon 97477.

In memory of Arthur; go for a run, read to a child, or attend a Eugene Symphony Concert.

Services will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Temple Beth Israel at 1:00 pm in Eugene, Oregon. Graveside services at 2:30 p.m. with Military Honors to follow at the Eugene Masonic Cemetery. I had so much fun working with Arthur. I remember giving him the title of Superintendent for the afternoon when Nancy was out of the office. He was so tickled. He put his feet up on the desk, and told me I could go home. Lol. He would often walk by my desk and whisper " Hi" because we talked to much and we were always getting in trouble. He often joked that he couldn't believe that at his age he was being put in time out. In the corner office . We had to be separated!! I will always cherish the many memories I had the honor of experiencing with Arthur. I love you me dear friend.

Grandpa Art, as he was known to many former softball players in Eugene, was a great man. I have such fond memories of him from my adolescent years. He attended hundreds of games, always with that famous grin. The world was so very blessed by him and he will be missed.

Arthur and I shared friendship and Hult Center events over the years. Walking to the concert hall, he always looked forward to giving money to those who asked along the way. I remember his favorite performance was a magic show. Arthur usually wore a hat; all the better for pulling out metaphorical rabbits, entertaining us, and making us laugh. He will be missed by the many who were fortunate enough to have known him. Rest in peace, Arthur. Thanks for the magic.
