When I moved back to Oregon after attending high school in Louisiana, Uncle Joe recommended me for an entry level position at The Register-Guard. This was after I had held several odd jobs over the previous couple of years (rose dis-budder, retail clerk at three different stores, plumbing/air conditioning secretary, stall cleaner), and I am so grateful for him making the recommendation - I stayed at the paper for 39 years and almost all of them were great. I was able to raise my kids with the security of a good job.
And for many of the early years, I actually got to work with Uncle Joe quite a bit! It's not a stretch at all to say that everyone I knew at the RG loved Joe. He was fair-minded and efficient, and just darned likable! I always enjoyed that my closest co-workers started calling him "Uncle Joe" with me!
I will definitely miss Uncle Joe, and have lots of great memories with him.
The picture I've included is from a giant family reunion we had in 2000 at Silver Falls State Park.
Thinking of all of his excellent kids - you were so lucky to have him!
