On August 3, 2016, beloved husband, father and grandfather Melvin "Mel" E. Damewood Jr passed away from cancer in his home in Eugene, Oregon, with his family by his side. He was 86. He was born on March 10, 1930, to Melvin and Edith Damewood in Drain, Oregon. Mel graduated from University High in Eugene in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army in Austria and Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1953.

On April 6, 1953, he married Mary Lou Roda of St. Cloud, Minn., in St. Cloud. They moved to Eugene, where they remained and raised four children. He attended the University of Oregon. In 1950 he started working for the Eugene Water and Electric Board, retiring from his position as Assistant to the General Manager in 1988. Mel was an avid hunter and traveler. He was also an accomplished oil painter, and his landscapes are in the homes of many family and friends.

Mel is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, and his sister, Delores Moreland, of Eugene. His four children and their spouses also survive him: daughters Kathy (J.D.) Wells of Bothell, Wash.; and Ann and Peggy Damewood; and his son, Mel (Kathy) Damewood III, all of Eugene. Mel is also survived by seven grandchildren: Andrea (Karl) and Katie Damewood of Portland; Dean Wells of Bothell, Wash.; Benjamin Damewood of Spokane, Wash.; and Madelyn, Christopher and McKerra Damewood of Eugene. We all loved him so much.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 am on Friday, August 12, at St. Paul Catholic Church, located at 1201 Satre Street in Eugene. A reception will follow. Arrangements by Andreason's Funeral and Cremation Service in Springfield.
