Carol McGuire Obituary

Carol D. McGuire
Carol D. McGuire, age 89, entered into eternal rest on Friday, Dec. 26, 2025. She was born in Derby, CT on January 11, 1936, daughter of the late Charles Francis Dunning and Grace (McCormick) Dunning. Carol was predeceased by her childhood sweetheart and loving husband of 50 years, William H. "Flip" McGuire.
Carol was a lifelong Valley resident and devout communicant of The Church of the Assumption, Ansonia, CT. She graduated from The Assumption School in 1949, St. Mary's High School in New Haven in 1953 and Southern CT State Teachers College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She later returned to Southern to complete her master's degree in Reading. Carol had the pleasure of teaching in each public elementary school in Ansonia 30 years.
She often shared funny stories and triumphs of her students at the family dinner table. Carol cherished her coworkers who became lifelong friends. Carol was an active member of her church and community. She taught catechism at Assumption School, was a member of the Historical Society, the Democratic Town Committee and the Charter Hose Ladies Auxiliary.
When she wasn't busy with family and friends, Carol could be found at her home in lifelong Cape Cod, MA. There she enjoyed time with family and friends and plenty of shopping.
She is survived by her four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and Michael Czapor of Waterbury, Margaret and Gregory Kelly of Stratford, Melissa and Keith Ellery of Swanton, VT and Mary Lee and Dan McClellan of Woodbury. She was predeceased by her only son, William F. McGuire, her brother, Thomas F. Dunning, and brothers-in-law, Frederick McGuire and Milton H. Hupprich. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Lillian McGuire and Irene Hupprich. She was a loving and devoted grandmother to her fifteen grandchildren: Patrick, Shaun and Kevin (Jackie) McGuire, Stephen, Matthew and Elizabeth Czapor, Ryan (Marissa) Kelly, Kathleen (Brandan) Sheehan, Michael and Maura Kelly, William (Arielle) Ellery, Lauren (Cole) Irish, Jonathan Ellery, Anthony and Daniel Della Volpe. As well as five great-grandchildren, William and Joshua McGuire, Luella and Samantha Ellery and Leah Irish.
The family would like to thank the wonderful people at Coachman Square of Woodbridge who lovingly cared for our mother as if she were their own. We were truly blessed. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 10:00 am - 11:30 am at Bennett Funeral Home, 91 N. Cliff St., Ansonia, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Assumption at Noon and burial at Mount St. Peters Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Assumption School in care of the funeral home.

Dear Mary Ellen, Melissa, Margaret, Mary Lee, and family, Reading about your Mom´s passing brought so many beautiful memories to mind. She had 2 of my boys as students and I was able to work along side of her in some of the schools as their nurse. The love, compassion, and dedication to every was amazing. She touched everyone in such a special way, and they all are not only fortunate for knowing her but are better because of her. How could someone be stern but so sweet , all at the same time! She was so proud of her wonderful family, as they were of her. My memories go from when I was in high school, having her Dad(Mr. Dunning) as my teacher to working along with Mary Ellen and Melissa. They both had all their Mom´s traits. And then there was Melissa´s wedding.. I remember being in such awe of the closeness and love at that wedding! (Very Irish, to say the least!) I could go on and

My family lived across the street from Carol. Her mom and Dad were good friends with her parents Grace and Frank. Carol grew up with my sister Louise and brother Bob. I was much younger then they were, but have many fond memories. She was a wonderful woman.

Carol was such a wonderful person. We rented the house at Rutherford Cape many years ago. But mostly I became friends with Carol when I worked at Mead school. We had so many fun times together in and out of school along with our very good friends Bonnie Dalton and Nancy Pereiras. I am so sorry for your loss. I know how much she loved her family.
