OAKVILLE- Joan W. (Gall) Steel, 82, of Oakville, Connecticut, died on November 21, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of the late Harvey J. Steel.
Joan was born on May 8, 1943, in Dundee, Scotland, daughter of the late James and Nan (Wilson) Gall. She worked various part-time jobs at Lorraine Gardens, Kalita Insurance, Crystal Rock and John Trumbull YMCA after school programs. She volunteered at the Watertown Library Book Nook and sang in the First Congregational Church choir for 25 years. She enjoyed gardening, baking and knitting and entering her pies and quilts in the Bethlehem Fair, where she won numerous blue ribbons. She was an accomplished athlete who participated in various triathlons, competing with her family until she was 67 years young. Joan was an avid sports fan and loved following the NY Mets, Syracuse Basketball, all soccer (football) games and anyone hitting a tennis ball.
Joan is survived by her two sons, Andrew J. Steel (Sonia Atkins) of Waterbury, and David and (Rebecca) Steel of Oakville; her two grandchildren, Jake Steel (Taylor) of Oakville, and Alyssa Steel (Josh) of Middlebury; three sisters-in-law, Aileen Banks, Sheena (Harry) Raimondo and Maureen (Gerry) Wilkie; three nephews, Calum, Jason and Aaron; and two nieces, Pam and Alison. She was pre-deceased by her brother-in-law, Clark Banks; and nephew, Roddy Banks.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Ivy Assisted Living Facility in Watertown for taking such good care of Mom.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at the First Church of Bethlehem, 21 Main Street, South Bethlehem, CT. Friends and family are asked to meet directly at church. Burial is private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
