Joann F. Kubina, 91, of Torrington, CT, passed away, peacefully in her sleep, on Feb. 6, 2026. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Joseph T. Kubina, in 2007. Joann, a lifelong resident of Torrington, had been independently living in the house that her husband, Joe, built and was a source of pride for her. Health restrictions finally caught up and she moved, in September of 2023, to be with her only child, Mary Elizabeth K. Austin, and her husband, Robert G. Austin, in Springdale, Arkansas, but always thought of Torrington as her home.
Working for the Torrington Register for many years, as a young woman at the start of her career, was one of her fondest memories. This was followed by years at Mertz Department Store in the advertising dept., then time at Ebersol, McCormick & Reis LLC law firm. She took great satisfaction that she was a business woman, having a lengthy career.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed traveling, especially any place that had a beach and warm weather, staying with friends in Old Saybrook, CT, and often visiting St. Thomas USVI when Mary Elizabeth lived there and to their time-share in St. Martin. In addition to her daughter and son-in-law, she leaves behind a sister-in-law and husband, along with several nephews and nieces, from the Dzurnaks, Tagan and Pelkey families.
Per her wishes, there will be no viewing. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Church, in Torrington, will be held on February 19th, at 11:00 am. Family and close friends are welcome to a breakfast that morning, prior to Mass.
