John Mahoney Obituary

John Mahoney
May 15, 1955 - November 22, 2025
John Mahoney, age 70 of Washington, CT, passed away with family by his side on November 22, 2025. John was born on May 15, 1955, in Danbury, CT, the son of John A. Mahoney and Mary Jean Mahoney. John was a devoted husband to his wife, Betty for 39 years, and a loving father to his son, Jack.
John spent 10 years working as a Police Detective in the Bureau of Narcotics and Special Operations Division at Danbury Police Department before being hired by the Connecticut State's Attorney's office, where he worked as an Inspector for 30 years. Professionally, John was known for his diligent and thorough police work. Still, most notably, his thoughtful and compassionate nature, which he left on the lives of victims, families, friends, and anyone he crossed paths with is what holds at the forefront of memories.
John lived a life of humility and devotion to the Lord, guided by his strong Catholic faith. Although John had several professional accomplishments, his greatest joy came from serving others in a quiet, selfless fashion. In addition to serving as a member of the Knights of Columbus for his parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, John frequently volunteered at Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen in New Milford, CT, and worked Ski Patrol at Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall, CT. Throughout the years, John enjoyed practicing martial arts, earning his black belt in jiu-jitsu and maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle. Aside from supporting his beloved New York Yankees, John enjoyed travelling each year to Washington DC to watch Jack pitch for the Catholic University Cardinals baseball team. John remained a constant presence in the lives of family members and offered unwavering help to friends and those in need. John was a constant example of someone who practiced faith through good works, without seeking recognition.
John was predeceased by his parents, John Mahoney and Jean Mahoney, and his sister Noreen Mahoney. Survivors include his wife, Betty Mahoney of Washington, CT, son, Jack Mahoney (wife Christy) of Vista, CA, brothers, Brian Mahoney of Westbrook, CT, Peter Mahoney (wife Liz) of Redding, CT, and sister, Mary Jones (husband Edward, pre deceased) of Greenwich, CT. John is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews, Kelly, Caroline, Will, Charlie, Michael, Doug, Katherine Henry, Laurie Anne, and dog Cricket.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on a date to be decided at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Washington, CT. A private family burial will follow. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Washington, CT.

My condolences to the Mahoney family. I worked with John in the Danbury State's Attorney's Office. John was one of the nicest people I knew. Even in the criminal justice system, he could always see the positive in people. He spoke of his family often. As a young parent I always valued his advice. He will be missed.

I had the honor and privilege to know John and his family back to his grandparents, former Chief of Police J Howard M'Goldrick and Esther M'Goldrick. All just wonderful and honorable individuals. I would often enjoy lunch with John during which he would speak of his son Jack and how proud he was of him. He was a true and impeccably dedicated professional. Rest in Peace John.

Very sorry to hear of John's passing. I worked with John for many years when he was with the Danbury PD and the Danbury State's Attoneys office. John was a very dedicated professional who was always ready to help. He was devoted to his family and his faith, especially his son Jack who was light of his life. May he rest in peace.
