Joseph James Cartiglia, 89, of Middlebury, formerly of Waterbury, entered into the gates of Heaven on Friday, November 14, 2025, at VITAS Healthcare Unit at St. Mary's Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Virginia L. (Barker) Cartiglia.
Joe was born in Bronx, NY, on June 28, 1936, son of the late Vincent and Eleanora (Caravello) Cartiglia. He proudly served his country in The U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After the military, he lived in Stratford, CT, and settled to Waterbury in 1973. He was longtime member of the Teamsters Local 677 Truck Drivers Union. He worked at Burts Beverages in Bethel for over 10 years. He enjoyed bowling, dancing, reading and trips to the casino.
Joe leaves to honor and cherish his memory, five children, Kurt A. Mortimer and his wife, Doris of Middlebury, Kristina Peterson and Michael Chiarella of Middlebury, twins, Craig E. Brenneman and his wife, Corrina, and Gregg A. Brennaman and Erica Kelly, all of Waterbury, and Toni Cartiglia of Spokane Valley, WA; a brother, Vincent Cartiglia of Long Beach, IL, NY; fifteen grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and wife, Joe was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor Falanga; and two grandsons, David Peterson and Michael T. Chiarella, Jr.
Arrangements: Funeral, Thursday, November 20, at 12:45 p.m. from Chase Parkway Memorial, the Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. Military Honors will follow the Mass in front of the Basilica. Burial will be private, at a later date, at the convenience of the family.
