Louis Nugai Obituary

Louis Nugai
Louis Nugai, age 81, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at home. He was the beloved husband of Debbie (Barr) Nugai.
Born in New York City, NY, on August 29, 1944, Lou was the son of the late Louis Nugai and Gertrude (Linskens) (Nugai) Bertrand. Along with his family, he moved to Waterbury in August of 1955. He attended Russell Elementary School, Wilby High School, Post Junior College, and Louisiana Tech University. Lou proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era, having served at Camp Lejeune. He worked in the IT Department at Timex, Inc. for 44 years. He was also a familiar face in the Taft School Hockey rinks, where he worked for 22 seasons.
Described perfectly by his high school book committee as a daydreaming, sports-minded, session room jester, Lou felt that his greatest accomplishment was living his adult life like Beaver Cleaver. He was an avid collector of trains and coins. He enjoyed playing golf with close friends. He also enjoyed playing golf and softball with the Timex League and every month, for years, he played cards with the Timex gang. His favorite sports teams included the Atlanta Braves, Boston Celtics, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Above all, Lou was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports and grow into adults. He loved their family dinners together and vacations at Cape Cod.
In addition to Debbie, his devoted wife of 56 years, Lou is survived by his son, Christopher Nugai of Waterbury; his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Nugai of Watertown; his beloved grandchildren, Jill Nugai of Watertown, Emma Nugai of Watertown, and Martin Nugai of Wakefield, MA. He also leaves his brother, Kenneth Nugai of Queens, NY; his brothers-in-law, Robert Barr of Meriden and Pat Ricciardella of Middleburgh, NY; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Todd Nugai.
Lou's family would like to thank the Hartford Healthcare Nursing and Hospice teams for their compassionate care shown to Lou and the family. A special thank you to their family and friends who were exceptionally kind over the past months.
Lou's funeral will be held on Friday, November 7, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. from Maiorano Funeral Home, 95 Willow St., Waterbury, to Our Lady of Loreto for a Mass at 10:00 a.m. Entombment with full military honors will follow in Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. Calling hours will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in Lou's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memorials Processing, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 or online at stjude.org . I first met Lou when he ran the Zamboni at Taft hockey rink , than later played golf with him and enjoyed our time in the Man cave where we met when not playing golf. A gentle quiet man and the best golfer of all of us.
