Sarah Cave Obituary

Sarah Elizabeth MeeRan Cave
Sarah Elizabeth MeeRan Cave, age 39, died on September 12th, 2025, in Mumbai, India, surrounded by friends, due to complications from Dengue fever. Born on February 19th, 1986, in Korea and adopted by her parents, Marcha and Peter Cave, Sarah was raised in Naugatuck, Connecticut. She began studying violin with Susan Brown at age 3. From a very young age, Sarah felt an affinity for the arts, and for the myriad ways music and the visual arts could express her inner self and touch other peoples' lives.
It was in her youth that Sarah's ability to create profound relationships was first evident. Through her community at Hillside Covenant Church, Sarah developed lifelong friendships through the Church's youth group and summer camp, Camp Squanto, and created lasting memories through her earliest violin performances.
Sarah attended Western Elementary and Hillside Middle School. Throughout her childhood, many teachers helped cultivate Sarah's love for music and the arts. While studying at Westover School, Sarah formed a community of lifelong sisters. She traveled weekly into New York to continue her violin studies at the Manhattan School of Music. She also studied visual art, served as First Head of the Glee Club, and was a passionate leader of the school's spirit team (Overs Forever!).
At North Park University in Chicago, Sarah majored in music and played with famed violinist, Midori. She became the youngest member in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and taught music at local schools. There she met mentor, Tom Zelle, who guided her to study under Rony Rogoff. Both teachers would become lifelong friends.
Sarah's violin took her around the world: Chicago, New York, Utah, the Gulf of Mexico, Canada, and more. A transformative trip to Seoul in 2011 sparked a deeper exploration of identity, inspiring her creative endeavors from her sculpture "Uhm-ma" to her original musical show, "Home En Route." However, India became her heart's home. After first teaching in Bangalore in 2010, Sarah returned in 2015 to study under master sarangi player, Pandit Dhruba Ghosh. For the last nine years, Sarah lived primarily in India, teaching and collaborating with a community of artists. In more recent years, she began to practice Sound Healing through her own method, Sound Bar and was exploring craniosacral therapy to add to her healing sessions.
Sarah had a tremendous capacity to create chosen families wherever she went. Her laugh was contagious, her humor bold, her honesty radical, her spirit generous, her voice bright. She spent her final weeks composing "Song of Belonging," a solo show about grief, healing and evolving relationships with her mothers. A teacher, a healer, and artist to the end, Sarah will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.
Sarah is survived by her uncles, Charles (Pam) Winburn, and Charles (Penny) Cave, as well as her aunts, Cheryl (Frank) Belletti, and Doreen (Greg) Moler, and many cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, grandparents, and her aunt, Dawn. While we mourn her death, Sarah's spirit lives on in the innumerable friends, teachers, and students who loved her across the world.
Multiple services to honor Sarah's life are planned across the US for the coming months. Service details will be provided at https://www.sarahmeerancave.com/ . More details about her amazing life can be found at her website.

Sarah was a beautiful soul I was fortunate to call a friend. Our Korean adoptee community has benefited greatly from her musical gifts and generosity of spirit. This photo memory is from a performance in Korea in 2023. Rest well, friend.

Sarah had such bright, kind, effusive energy. A life of generosity very well lived. We needed her for much longer.

How beautiful her soul, soaring spirit and great connection with others. A shortened life, yet certainly lived with full vitality.

Sara was such a vibrant person. For one thing, her smile could light up a room, but more than that, she was talented and fearless. One memory I have of her was in Venice on a Glee tour. I had to leave the group in that gorgeous piazza in front of San Marco to speak to a Prest about our singing at Mass in the cathedral. When I returned, there was Sara, set up with her violin case open, and playing her violin just like an experience busker! I think that she made enough for her lunch. Not bad for a teenaged girl in a foreign city. (Megan O'Keefe may have also been part of that.) Sara also drew a beautiful sketch of San Marco that we used for a program cover. Multi-talented. Sara played several times on Christmas Eve at my church in Waterbury, and continued to play for us professionally after she graduated from Westover. When we invited alumni to be part of a Westover virtual performance during Covid, Sara volunteered to be part of it- she just couldn't decide if she should play the violin or sing. I think that she wound up doing both. Typical Sara. And whenever she came back to visit, there was that terrific smile and warmth. We will miss you, Sara.
