Morris: Suzanne "Tinka" Skilton, 82, longtime resident of Morris and former owner of Popey's Ice Cream Shoppe, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 18, in the loving care of her family.
Born on June 28, 1943, to Porter and Susan Harvey of Warren, Tinka attended Warren Elementary School through sixth grade, then became part of Wamogo's inaugural seventh-grade class in 1955. Throughout her years at Wamogo, she forged many lifelong friendships and, most importantly, met and fell in love with Richard Skilton. After graduating from Wamogo in 1961, Tinka and Richard spent one college semester apart before marrying on January 6, 1962. They shared more than six decades of commitment, perseverance and unconditional love as husband and wife.
She leaves behind a family who adored her, including Richard Skilton, her devoted husband of 63 years; her son, Todd; her son, Mark, and his wife, Jill; four grandchildren, Josh and his wife, Rachel, Miranda, Piper, and Riley; great-granddaughter, Thea; sister-in-law, Jeanne Harvey; niece, Tracy; nephew, Cory; and several cherished friends, who she considered family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Porter Harvey.
Tinka considered herself beyond fortunate to have lived such a long, joyous life, surrounded by friends and family. It is in that spirit that the Skilton family invites loved ones and members of the community to join them on Sunday, September 14, at 1 p.m. at Popeye's, in Morris, to celebrate Tinka's life through music and storytelling, with opportunity for all to share memories and reflections. Popeye's will remain closed for business that day, but ice cream will be served to guests courtesy of Popeye's current owner, Kristen (Worden) Korzinski.
At Tinka's request, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to a fund that reflects her own deeply-held values; The David Paletsky Community Fund, 21 Higbie Road, Morris, CT 06763, was established in memory of David Paletsky, whom Tinka and Richard considered a dear friend. The fund provides assistance to anyone in the community who finds themselves in need. Supporting those around her was something that meant a great deal to Tinka.
