Charles Randall Diggs, 85. Passed away May 8, 2011 at his home after an extended illness. Funeral will be Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Earl Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Charles was born January 2, 1926 at the family farm 6 miles east of Crowell, Texas. He attended Gambleville Elementary and completed his education in 1943. He worked on the family farm with his Father and Brothers. He also worked in the oilfield in Pampa prior to being drafted into the U.S. Navy on May 11, 1944. He was stationed at Coronado Navy Base at San Diego, California. After completing his training, he remained at the base as an instructor on LCVP-landing crafts. He was assigned to the Highland, a transport ship and sailed for Japan on Thanksgiving Day 1945. He was then assigned to the U.S.S. New Jersey and sailed for home on Christmas Day 1945. After serving 23 months he was discharged March 21, 1946 in Houston. He returned to Crowell to work on the farm where he met Patsy Sessums. They were married April 18, 1947 then moved to Sweetwater, TX in November 1950. He worked in the oilfield for a time and then began working for Coca-Cola as a Route Salesman. He retired after 34 years. After his retirement, he operated the Monticello 66 Station on East Broadway for 10 years.
Charles was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church where he had served as a Deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Alice Diggs, brothers Wayne and Morris and sister Edna.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Patsy, son Mark and wife Nancy of Abilene, TX; granddaughter Shannon of Lubbock, TX; grandson Christopher of Salt Lake City, Utah; several cousins, brothers-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews including Ricky Diggs of Crowell, Texas.
He is also survived by a group of coffee drinking friends. "Coffee Drinking Fellowships" at Whataburger or Doris's Sweet Shop was a daily source of enjoyment for Charles.
In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church box 956 Sweetwater, TX 79556, Integra Care Hospice 1822 26th Snyder, TX 79549; or any Charity of the donor's choice.
The family wishes to thank Integra Care Hospice for the loving care given to Charles during his illness. Becky Brown, Stacey Vierus, Penny Moffett, Patricia Quick, Kenny Robinson, Alan McGuire, Rita Havner, Irene Galbraith, Janie Martinez, Tammy Flores and Rosa Hernandez. As well as others provided many hours of support that the family deeply appreciates
A family visitation will be held Wednesday , May 11, 2011 at McCoy Funeral Home from 5:30 to 7:00 P.M.
Pallbearers will be Jack Aycock, Bill Brock, Don Adkins, Grady Sessums, Duane Sessums, and Ricky Diggs.
