He was a Christian and a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene and also a member of the Breakfast Optimist Club. He attended schools in the Hico school district and graduated from Abilene High School in 1964. After graduating, Jerry joined the military as a member of the National Guard. Upon an honorable discharge he returned to Abilene to pursue a career of being a fireman. He earned a Fire Science Degree from Cisco Junior College and began his career with the Abilene Fire Department where he remained for 25 years rising to the rank of District Chief.

Jerry later performed the duties of Fire Marshall for Comanche, Texas and Copperas Cove, Texas. They moved back to Abilene and at the time of his death, Jerry was employed by the Texas Forrest Service as a Wildland/Urban Interface Specialist.

Hello Louise,
I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. We haven't been in contact but I fondly remember playing with Jerry and Connie at Hico as a child. Those were good times. Connie just told me about Jerry. Our thoughts are with you in this difficult time.

Louise,
There was NEVER a man who stood taller in both spirit and character than Jerry. The entire Pogue family have loved you both over many, many years. My father considered Jerry one of his dearest and most loyal friends. I know they are enjoying "catching up" with each other in Heaven. Our heartfelt prayers and love are sent to you now and always.
