Abilene, TX

Joe M. Castro Sr., 77, passed away Friday evening, June 24, 2016, with his loving family and church friends at his side. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Monday, June 27, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 837 Jeanette Street, with Monsignor Robert Bush officiating. Burial will follow at the Abilene Municipal Cemetery, directed by Abilene Funeral Home.

Mr. Castro was born March 24, 1939, in Sweetwater, TX to the late Cipriano and Simona Alvarado Castro. Joe lived up to his teenage years in Sweetwater, then moving to Roscoe and Hereford for a while, Finally settling down in Abilene. He married the love of his life in 1957 at Colorado City and together raised eight wonderful children. Mr. Castro owned and operated Joe's Electric Motor Shop for 25 years, was an active church member, loved to BBQ, and enjoyed coaching baseball. Joe used his electrical experience to do jobs for the local hotels, hospitals, ACU and many other businesses. He never backed down from helping with church events or just helping a friend in need. Joe will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ana Castro of Abilene; four sons, Joe M. Castro, Jr. (Esther) of Lake Jackson, TX, Christopher Robert Castro of Abilene, Arthur Castro of Abilene and Leonardo Sidro Castro (Mandy) of Houston; four daughters, Martha Hernandez (Morris) of Abilene, Lydia Rose (Johnny L.) of Abilene, Christina Castro of Abilene and Joanna Castro of Lubbock; three brothers, Tony Castro (Lupe) of Houston, Frank Castro and Richard Castro (Wyona) of San Angelo; eight sisters, Mary Vargas of Abilene, Cruz Dias (Luis) of Sweetwater, Juanita Ortega of Abilene, Teresa Baldivia (Jessie) of Sweetwater, Maggie Ybarra of Lubbock, Angelina Soto of Austin, Victoria Castro of Abilene and Julie Lopez (Mike) of Abilene; 29 grandchildren; and 37 great grandchildren.

Mr. Castro was preceded in death by his parents, Cipriano and Simona Castro; a brother, "Pat" Castro; four brother-in-laws, Augustine Vargas, Pete Soto, Raul Ybarra and Alejandro Ortega; and two granddaughters.

The family will receive friends at a visitation from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday, June 26,2016 at Abilene Funeral Home Chapel of Hope, 3349 North 12th Street, with praying of the rosary starting at 7:00 PM, followed by wake at 7:30 PM .

We are so sorry for the loss of a great man. Joe was a good friend of mine that guy breathed electricity he was a walking transformer. He really inspired me. Joe will be missed by all that knew him. Our prayers are with him and the family.
