Julian Olsen Obituary
Santa Maria, CA
Julian Clarence Olsen, 93, died on Thursday, June 9, 2011, in Santa Maria, CA. He was born to Julius Olsen and Clara Nelson on May 19, 1918, in Abilene, TX. He graduated from Abilene High School and attended Hardin Simmons University, where his father was dean (1901 to 1942). After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he moved to Los Angeles, CA, to work in the aviation industry.
He met Juanita Hayes, of Wichita Falls, TX, while attending Hardin Simmons. They were married in 1942, in El Paso. The Olsens moved to Glendale, CA and later to the Los Angeles suburb of Eagle Rock. They had one son, Neil Hayes Olsen. Later divorced. In 1962, Julian married Jane Schneider, of Portland, OR.
Julian loved to travel, especially on cruises. He visited all the continents, except Antarctica. Julian loved his work. His job as a field representative for Lockheed Aircraft and Boeing Aircraft took him to Morocco, Spain, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Brazil, Canada, and Hong Kong. During World War 2, he was an instructor on Lockheed's P-38 fighter, his favorite aircraft. He also was intimately familiar with Lockheed's P2V, Electra (P3V), L-1011, and Boeing's 737 and 747 models. After he retired, he and Jane moved to Santa Maria, CA.
Julian gave back to the local community. He was actively involved with the retired Lockheed employees' central California organization, a member of the Santa Maria Elks Lodge 1538, and docent and life member at Santa Maria Museum of Flight. Julian lived a full life and leaves many memories to those who survive him. He liked to wear Western-style clothes and had a collection of cowboy hats that marked his unique personality. His Texas accent never left him.
Julian is survived by his son, Neil (Gloria), and his first wife, Juanita. He is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings: Julius Nelson, Regina, Claudine, and Ollie Lena; and his second wife, Jane.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 18, at 1:30 p.m. at Santa Maria Terrace, 1405 E. Main St., Santa Maria, CA.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Neptune Society.

I always loved hearing Julian talk about his experiences and adventures. He had a great sense of humor. I'll never forget the wild variety of food he'd bring on his visits and the stories he'd share.
