LaRue Abbott "Gooey" Abernathy, centenarian at 101 years of age, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2014, in Aspermont. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 8, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church of Aspermont, with burial following at the Aspermont Cemetery. She will lie in state at the Church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the service. Visitation will be held from 5:00-6:30 p.m. on Sunday. Online condolences may be made at www.adamsfosterrayfh.com.

Born September 23, 1913, in Aspermont, Texas, LaRue was the daughter of the late Thomas Nathan and Alma Lee (Aycock) Abbott. She graduated from Aspermont High School at the age of sixteen, obtained her Associates Degree from Wichita Falls Jr. College, and furthered her education in New Orleans. On July 12, 1939, she married the love of her life, Charles Goodwin Abernathy, in Aspermont. LaRue was a lifelong resident of the Stonewall County. She worked in various occupations though out her life, she served as the first female Deputy of Stonewall County, Tax Clerk, and taught school. LaRue was very passionate about her community and her church. In 1959 they donated the land to serve as the building block for the community's youth baseball program, she was an integral part of the Stonewall County Senior Inc., where she served on the Board of Directors for 35 years. LaRue's love for our God was unwavering; she was a member of the First United Methodist Church, she served as the first female President of the Official Board, she taught Sunday school, and was a Shepherd for her congregation. She was the "Rock" of her family, and an inspiration to all that knew her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, five sisters, and one brother.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, George and Ellen Abernathy of Aspermont; one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Sandy Gilley of Aspermont; one sister, Jane Ayers of Abilene; seven grandchildren, Carlton Abernathy and wife, Amy, Molly Wells and husband, Davey, Dustin Hicks and wife, Lyndsey, Cody Hicks, Jennifer Graham and husband, Brandon, Jason Gilley and wife, Misty, Shane Gilley and wife, Sharon, and DeDe Scifres and husband, Joe Dan; twelve great-grandchildren, Cash Gilley, Kenzie Scifres, Katelyn Gilley, Colby Gilley, Blaynee Strickland Gilley, Brecken Gilley, Lexie Graham, Zoey Graham, Carson Wells, Zachary Abernathy, Caeden Coker, Mickey Hicks and one on the way; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends.
