Charles Grant Obituary

Charles Moses "Tiny" Grant was born in Bancroft, Idaho December 23, 1931, to Charles Calvin Grant and Mabel Croney Grant. Amid many cousins, aunts, and uncles, he attended grade school, junior high, and high school in Southeastern Idaho, graduating from American Falls High School in 1950. He went on to the University of Utah where, under "Pappy" Jack Curtice, he was a player on the 1951-1954 championship football teams. Many life-long friendships were created among the members of that team. He also was a championship heavyweight wrestler at the "U" and was elected to the Beehive Honor Society of the University of Utah. Charles became an educator and coach, teaching and coaching at Montpelier High School in Montpelier, Idaho, Clearfield High School in Clearfield, Utah, and Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. Following his coaching career he served in several administrative positions at Ricks, retiring in 1997.

Involved in civic and church affairs, Charles was a member of the Madison School District 321 Board of Trustees as well as the Idaho State Board of Education, serving on that board for five years, one year as its President. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he had the privilege of serving in many leadership positions. He served as the Mission President, Leader, of the California Anaheim Mission (1981-1984) and held the same position at the Provo Missionary Training Center (1992-1994). At the time of his death, he was a Patriarch.

He married Gay Kendrick June 12, 1957, and they are the parents of four children, Trisha (Cal) Udy, Tracie, Kendall (Susan) and Trent (Robin). He is survived by Gay, his children, ten wonderful grandchildren; Greg, Carly, Tanner, Kendall, Michael, Kendrick, Collin, McKenna, Adri, and Katy, and four precious great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Kendall and Boyd.

A viewing and funeral will be held at the St. Anthony 3rd Ward church located at 507 W 2nd N, St. Anthony, Idaho, with the viewing on Thursday, March 30th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and Friday, March 31st from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the 11:00 a.m. funeral. To Gay and family,
I too had the privilege of serving in the "Great" Anaheim, California mission under President Grant's leadership. I love him and Gay for their heartfelt love and example. I have many fond memories of both of you, and I am most grateful for all you did for me, Two special memories come to mind; your kind greeting at the mission home upon my arrival to serve, and President Grant personally coming to our apartment at 6:00 a.m. the day my father passed to give me the news. He did this in the most sensitive and loving way. I will always love him for this Christlike gift and for the comfort and peace he helped me to have that day. He is truly a man of God.
Brian Malone (1983-1984).

To Gay and all your Family
You have my heartfelt sympathy to you and yours.
I first met Coach "Tiny" Grant in 1960 and was impressed by him and later his beautiful wife. For
the next period of time I came to know him better as
a coach, person and teacher. I learned many important
life lessons that have helped and stayed with me past
1963 when I went in a different lifes direction (CHS class
of 63).
May all share Eaches special memories with others so they too can know the special spirit he has. That will
keep him with us always with smiles and memories of
his special spirit of kindness, caring, love and example.
May God's special blessings of Peace, Faith and Comfort
be yours now and always.
Sincerely,
James Cook

I served with President Grant in the California Anaheim. I have fond memories of and a great love for this man. I remember playing basketball against him in the mission home on the last day of my mission. I tried to muscle him out of the key but failed miserably. He was like a large brick wall strong and unmovable. Just like his testimony I learned from him. Thank you for your influence. I will always remember this.

Tiny recruited me out of high school to play football at Ricks (1968). That next summer, he drove from Rexburg to Boise to speak at my mission farewell. He was a wonderful, kind, witty, fun man who I highly respected. I will always have loving memories of this giant of a human being, both physically and spiritually. He had a tremendous impact on me during those formative years. I pray his beautiful wife will find comfort in his passing. Love you Coach!

Tiny Grant lived in my Ward in Sunset, Utah. I remember him as a great basketball player. He was six feet, five inches tall and weighed over 300 pounds. In the 1950's he played center on our church team which won the All-Church Championship. Later, he coached me for four years of C.H.S. wrestling. As big as he was, he could out sprint everyone on the high school track team. Tiny, also became a spiritual giant. What a man!

He was my coach when playing football at Ricks College-1971-72. Can remember him turning to bench several times during that ICAC Championship year and asking, "Is there anyone who has not played?" That was my new position. He was also my Bishop during that challenging period in my life. He helped me prepare for and then serve a worthy mission. Interestingly, I served in the California Anaheim Mission, the same mission he presided over a few years later in 1981-1984. Deep love for this man!!!

I served in the California Anaheim Mission office with President Grant. I loved getting to know him and Sister Grant. We had great basketball games at the mission home and some lively racketball games also. President Grant always won. I enjoyed getting calls from him to come un-jam the office copy machine. He was a great man and a great leader. I learned a lot from him. I also enjoyed Sister Grants music box carousel at the mission home. She always had some candy in it.

As a missionary in the Anaheim mission I grew to love President Grant. He was a great example. His strength and compassion as a leader I am sure influenced the lives of many young people the way they did mine. May you be blessed with peace and comfort during this time.

Coach Grant was a great leader at Clearfield High back in 1964 when I graduated. He won an award from a prominent sports magazine for the second-best-designed football play, a double-reverse pass. As the sports editor for our newspaper I interviewed him for the related story. I remember how irritated he became when he read that I had quoted him accurately when he told me, "...I don´t know how the other play was picked over mine...." A serious guy with lots of character and sincerity, he left an impression on me. May God rest his soul and comfort his family and friends.

This makes me sad While teaching at Montpelier High Svhool he was swim coach and taught me to swim. His wife was my young women´s teacher. I remember she broke her leg while playing with her little boy. They were both so good with the youth. I loved them both. They really added to our community.
