Val Dalling Obituary

Val Dean Dalling, 81, passed on to meet his eternal sweetheart, Nelda, on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, of natural causes, at his son's home in Rexburg.
Val was born in Sugar City on Oct. 12, 1926, to William Ricks Dalling and Sarah Ethel Orme. He was the fifth of seven children. He grew up in Sugar City, attending Sugar-Salem High School, where he lettered in football, baseball, basketball and track. Three days after graduation, he was sworn into the U.S. Army, serving in Germany and France in World War II.
After returning from the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Nelda Luke, in the Idaho Falls LDS temple. He then graduated from Ricks College with a bachelor's degree in science, on an athletic scholarship. He earned his Masters of Education at Utah State University.
He helped to organize and start the little league baseball program in Rexburg, where Nelda and he gave countless hours coaching, keeping score and officiating at many tournaments. He helped with American Legion Baseball and gave to the community through many years of service with the Kiwanis.
Val taught and coached sports at Madison and Sugar-Salem high schools.
He served as Madison Junior and Senior High School principal. He was President and Vice President of the 6th District Principal's Association. He then went to Ricks College as assistant basketball coach, intramural director, teacher, and public relations liaison. He later served as Ricks baseball coach. He loved working with the youth.
He and Nelda were awarded with the Distinguished Emeritus Service Award from the Ricks College Alumni, the People Make The Difference award from Madison High School and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rexburg Chamber of Commerce.
He served as bishop, stake president and patriarch in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He and Nelda served a mission at the San Diego Mormon Battalion Visitors' Center. They loved serving in the Idaho Falls Temple together. After returning home from their mission, Val spent many hours volunteering at Madison High School helping with the boys football and baseball, girls softball and basketball, with Nelda cheering and supporting the youth.
Val is survived by his five children and their spouses, Sherry Jardine of South Jordan, Utah, Vickie (Steve) Burningham of Centerville, Utah, Dean (Kathleen) of Rexburg, Debbie (Dean) Murray of West Haven, Utah, Roger (Kerry) of South Jordan, Utah; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brothers John, Lynn, Glenn and sister Elva Rose.
Preceded in death by his loving wife, Nelda, brother Lyle, sister Vola and his parents. The family would like to thank Dean and Kathleen for the loving care they gave dad.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at the Rexburg 12th Ward, Park Street church with Bishop Shiley officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Rexburg 12th Ward and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Rexburg Cemetery, under the direction of Flamm Funeral Home.

My father is Kim Hatch and he served as Bishop Dallings first assistant. In his personal history Bishop Dallings was someone he mentioned as being a large influence for good in his life and included a letter Bishop Dallings wrote him. I appreciate his dedicated service and I know he was a blessing to my dad and my family.

To all the Dalling Family: We were sorry to hear of your Dad's passing but what a great reunion with your mom. They were such a great couple and a wonderful example to me. I loved them both dearly and I know you will miss them but the wonderful memories you have will see you through until you are reunited. Sorry we missed the funeral but know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. My dad also loved your Dad and I can see them now reminisicing about their days at Ricks College. What a legacy you have. You can all be very proud to be their children. Thinking of you. Love Wylie & Joyce Henderson Browning

Brother Dalling was a neighbor to my family a few houses away. I noticed he always had a smile on his face & was very friendly when I walked by their home. May peace and comfort be with the Dalling family during this time. Jennifer Kingsford Ricks

Bishop Dalling was our first Bishop when we moved to Rexburg 32 years ago and made us feel so welcome. He and Nelda were always so kind and caring. Just being around them gave you such a positive feeling about life. They were such a wonderful example to all. We are happy they are together again.

The Dalling Family:

What a great man!! I know how happy he is to be reunited with your mom. They were a special couple! He was such a great example, to not only his players, but to other coaches. Everything he did was in the best interest of those involved. He will be missed.

With deepest sympathy

I learned my best lessons in sportsmanship, integrity, and honor from my father, Glen and Val/Nelda Dalling. They were always willing to listen when the going got rough. They were friends to everyone and were always interested in what you were doing no matter where you were. I considered them best friends. Nelda and Val were such good examples of love, compassion and concern for all. They have left you a great legacy.

Dear Dalling Family,
I'm sorry to hear of your loss, but what a reunion your dad must be having with your mom right now. As I grew up in your ward, and as a friend of Debbie, I always thought you had such a neat family. I enjoyed spending time at your home. I have lost contact with all of your family, but still have many good memories of growing up among all of you.

Please send my regards to the Dalling family. I will not be able to be there, Kami and Chris with their families will be here with me for the week end.
I had great respect and love for the Dalling family. When I came back from Hawaii to look for work I stayed with them for a few days. They are a great family.

To the Dalling Family: Brother Dalling was on the coaching staff when I was at Ricks College and I was a secretary to the department. This was a long, long time ago, but he was always so kind and thoughtful to me and a pleasure to work with. Your family will certainly miss him and I hope all the good memories of great times together will carry you through this hard time.
