Betty Michell loved life. She loved her children and grandchildren. She loved her many friends. She loved her companion animals. And she loved stories - whether through the books she devoured, through films and television she watched, or through those told to her and those she told herself. Hers was a life well lived.
Betty Michell passed peacefully at Renown Hospital Saturday 4 October, holding the hands of family. Her 83 years were abundant and graced with love.
Born Elizabeth Anne McLaughlin in New York, she left her home in 1958 to start a family with Robert Michell. An administrator for Western Union, they followed his work from Los Angeles to Seattle to Trenton and ultimately to Reno in 1972. By 1974 Betty was a widow raising two teenagers on her own.
She worked as a secretary at the VA hospital from 1975 to 1996 where she forged friendships that sustained her the remainder of her life.
Her positive outlook on life, her Catholic faith, and her commitment to approach each day with purpose helped her live life with love and laughter.
Betty is survived by her daughter Leigh Warren, son Michael Michell and partner Corinna Hasbach, granddaughter Valeri Warren and partner Kile Fye, grandson Chris Warren, companion animals Scruffy and Sierra, and a constellation of dear friends - they will all carry Betty with them in their hearts.
A private celebration of life was held by the family.
Donations in her name may be made to the SPCA of Northern Nevada, a pioneering no-kill shelter.

Betty was the most wonderful mother-in-law. We shared laughter and joy, whether walking Scruffy and Sierra, watching the videos she would tirelessly tape for our enjoyment, or the fun outings to Starbucks. She was generous of spirit and welcomed me with open arms. I will never forget the wonderful times Betty, Michael, and I had doing absolutely nothing. I will miss her greatly and she will never be forgotten. With love and peace her daughter-in-law, Corinna
