Jack Quade Obituary

Jack Gehring Quade

May 7, 1926

May 22, 2014

Jack Gehring Quade died in his sleep on the evening of May 22, 2014, at home in Reno. He was predeceased by his brother Gordon Quade. He is survived by his wife Sally; his sons, Konrad and Jay, and daughter Charissa; his grandchildren, Kirstin, Leah, Gratianne, and Emeric; and by his great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Brady, and Madeline.

Jack was born in Seattle, Washington, on May 7, 1926, then moved to southern California in 1933. Jack served with distinction in World War II on submarines in the Pacific 1943-1945, including the U.S.S. Skip Jack S.S. 184, the U.S.S. Plaice S.S. 390, and the U.S.S. Apogon S.S. 308. He was extremely proud of his service, and remained a member of the Corvina Base submarine veterans group until the end of his life.

Jack worked as a stockbroker in Los Angeles until 1961, when he decided to pursue his deep interest in geology. The family moved to Reno, and Jack graduated in 1965 from UNR. At various times of his life he worked at the Mackey School of Mines, for NASA, and for Bendix Corporation.

In 1952, Jack married Sally Armstrong, whose picture he carried with him for the duration of the War, and who was to be the passion of his life for 62 years. They were inseparable. Together they shared their love of travel and home building and, above all, the wilderness. They backpacked and fished all through the Sierra Nevadas and worked gold claims in their spare time.

Jack loved his family deeply, and until the end he put caring for them first. Although Jack will be so very missed by his family and friends, he had a long, happy life and a peaceful death at home with family at his side.

I was a student at UNR, majoring in geology during Jack's tenure there. I remember him assisting with our geology field camp in 1972. He was a great guy and a real mentor for me as a student. His stories of manning subs during WWII were fascinating listening. Sure miss the guy. Joe Kurtak Mackay School of Mines, class of '73'.

Beautiful couple sharing memories of Jack's brother Gordon. I'm so proud to have known Jack and Sally. I hope to see Sally again soon.

I remember Jack and Sally from Rincon de Guyabitos in Mexico where we all went for some years. I am now 90, and don't go there any more. Miss it.

On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans (USSVI) and to Sally and all of Jack's family and friends, we offer our sincere condolences in this time of loss and mourning. Our prayer is that God will bless you with peace, comfort you, and heal your broken hearts. We are especially thankful for Jack's courageous service to our country in the U.S. Submarine Service during WWII. Jack was a member of the Corvina SVWWII, TUCSON bases/chapters of the United States Submarine Veterans. To our “Brother of the Phin” we say … "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. May you rest in peace and may God bless your loved ones who remain. Thank you for your service to our country."

So, heavenly Father add his name to the roll
Of our departed shipmates still on patrol.
Let them know that we who survive
Will always keep their memories alive.

Bless those who serve beneath the deep,
Through lonely hours their vigil keep.
May peace their mission ever be!
Protect each one, we ask of Thee.

Bless those at home who wait and pray
For their return by night and day.

Jack was one of the good guys. I am glad to have known him for 40+ years... I was crushed when I called to chat today. It was not so long ago that we spoke and he was so happy to have Sally move back. He was looking forward to tomorrow. Thanks Jack...

I was a student at Mackay when Jack was working for NASA and based out of the Nevada Bureau of Mines. He assisted at our summer field camp in 1972. He was a great guy and a role model for me. I remember him sharing his experiences as a submariner during WWII and his love for the Sierra Nevada. A all around great guy.

I was a freshman at UNR, when Jack returned to College, we studied Math and German together that year and after. We would meet in the student union and take a break and talk. Jack was a great role model for us young guys. At the end of my freshman year, Jack said, "Hey, thanks and here our the keys to my beach house at Laguna Beach, go down for a week and have fun"! That was the kind of MAN he was. My condolences to the family.

Jack and I became friends while we endured two years of German classes at UNR. He and Bill Tafuri and I had many, many memorable chukar hunts. Jack was by far the best shot; no chukar was safe when he raised his Browning Superposed.

Jack was almost 20 years older than the rest of us UNR students, but he was stronger and in better shape than most of us. When chukar hunting, he occasionally scampered up and down the steep hills while carrying Konrad in a pack frame. On backpack outings with his family, he shouldered a 100-pound pack. His fitness, lifestyle, and gracious family made him a role model to us.

Our deepest condolences to Sally, Jay, Konrad, and Eve. Jack and all of you are unforgettable.

To Jay and the rest of the Quade family.

My sincerest condolences upon the passing of your father. Jack was such a gentleman and I was so honored to get to know him as he visited Sally at Emeritus where my dad lived until his passing in October 2013. It was so nice to see Jack on my visits and to hear him reminisce about his time with my dad at the Mackay School of Mines. It was also special to see how much he treasured Sally and to watch him devote himself to her. That is the type of love you don't see every day. I hope your family finds comfort in that love.

It gives me great comfort to know that Jack and my dad are exploring the geology of heaven while they, and my mom, wait for Sally to join them. I can only imagine what a wonderful time they will have.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time.

Sincerely,
Debbie (Erwin) Padgett

Our condolences to Sally and his family. Jack was one of those very special people that just don't come along very often. I saw him a couple of years ago and he was still that vibrant, happy person he always was. And that big smile--how can you forget it. Rest in peace, my good friend.
