James Tate Obituary

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — James Tate, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and longtime English professor at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, has died. He was 71.

He died Wednesday after a long illness, the university said.

Tate was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1992 for "Selected Poems." It was one of many honors he received, including the National Book Award for the 1994 Worshipful Company of Fletchers and a National Institute of Arts and Letters award for poetry.

Over his career, he published more than 20 books of poetry.

Tate taught in UMass-Amherst's Master of Fine Arts program for poets and writers since 1971.

Kumble Subbaswamy, the university's chancellor, called Tate one of the school's most distinguished faculty members.

"For over four decades, professor Tate generously shared his extraordinary talents with students and colleagues," Subbaswamy said. "Although he will be greatly missed, his poetry will live on and continue to inspire."

A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Tate attended Kansas State College of Pittsburg and was studying at the University of Iowa writers' workshop when, at 23, his first collection of poetry, "The Lost Pilot," was chosen for the Yale Series of Younger Poets, which is for poets under 40 who had not previously published a volume of poetry.

A celebration of Tate's life and his poetry would be held in New York City in the fall, said Jennifer Jacobson, associate director of the university's MFA program.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately known.

He was married to poet and fellow UMass-Amherst English professor Dara Wier.

Just today, February 18, 2017 while doing some ancestry work. I ran across the college production photos of Jim and I while at Pittsburg State. We were in Antigone together. Many bus trips from Pittsburg to Kansas City, Jim and I took and much conversation. I am saddened to then find out about his death. Just sad. My condolences to his family, David Holroyd Lawrence, KS/Arizona

I met Jim when he first came to Umass Amherst to teach creative writing. He was as alert as one could be. He was only a few years older then myself and fellow students and we loved him the best. I just learned today of his passing, being out of the loop so to speak. Hints to Pilgrims trashed our minds and rolled us around. I am so sad for Jim and his family. He was the highest point in my education. Sincerely Jeff Dubay

James Tate's writings were so inspiring and so full of meaning. I am so happy that he was recognized and rewarded for his gift. My earnest petition is that the promise of endless life in Paradise free of sickness and suffering for James proves to be both comforting and reassuring to loved ones left behind. My condolences!

How sad to lose such a wonderful poet, such an influence on so many, and such a good friend. I remember his whacky sense of humor, and his wonderful eye to spot and support the overlooked, the crazy detail and irony on our lives, and to poke a bit at the falseness that sometimes invades our lives. My sympathies to Dara and her children too.
