November 11, 2011

Kenneth Wesley Malmquist, MD, 78, passed away at Northern Nevada Medical Center with his wife Gail and son Andy by his side. Ken was born in Rushmore, Minnesota. A proud veteran of the Korean War, he joined the US Air Force at age 17, served three years in Korea, and later enlisted in the US Army, serving three years in occupied Germany. Ken used the GI Bill to pursue a pre-med degree at Texas Western College in El Paso, Texas. He then attended UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Texas, earning his doctorate in medicine in 1964. After his residency he moved to the Truckee Meadows in 1966 and practiced family medicine in Reno and Sparks for over three decades, remaining active in medicine even through retirement. Ken was a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity and he served the local medical community as a longtime member and president (1974-75) of the Nevada Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a member of the Washoe County District Board of Health (1978-90). Ken was involved in the Salvation Army and was a life member of Sertoma International, cooking Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for the disadvantaged for many years. He was also involved with the Korean War Veterans Mosquito Association.

Ken grew up an avid hunter and fisherman and continued those passions along with reading, woodworking, gardening and cooking throughout his life. He was renowned in social circles for his ability to entertain large groups with ease. He was hardworking and passionate in every aspect of his professional and social life.

Ken is survived by wife, Gail A. Malmquist of Sparks, daughter Toni Jo Malmquist Bryant and granddaughter Sydnie of Manhattan, Kansas, son Andy & Margaret Malmquist and grandson Michael of Sparks, son Dr. Nicholas & Camille Malmquist of Paris, France, son Casey Malmquist of Sparks, two sisters, Joan Guenther of Elkhart, Kansas, Dorothy (Dixie) Jansen of Worthington, Minnesota, and brother Homer Malmquist of Lake Wilson, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by brothers Jay, Burton, and Sumner Malmquist and one daughter. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.

Gail I was so sorry to hear about Ken. I don't know if you remember me but talking with you, and Ken, was one of the highlights of my mail route. Even though it has been almost 10 years since I moved to Florida, I still often think of those days.

Dr. Malmquist will be greatly missed by me and all who knew him in the medical community. His many years in the community provided the opportunity for many to be influenced by his medical care, compassion, sense of humor, and friendship.
Many have tried to re-create the hospitality suite at the yearly academy meeting, but none have come close to the atmosphere created by Ken and his crew. The late night poker games, the liquid refreshments, the smoke-filled room, the collegiality and the sense of comfort created by Ken will always be remembered by those fortunate enough to have shared the experience.

I live next door to Gail and Ken. Whenever I'd run over to their house Ken had a quick and ready smile. A classy, loving husband to "My Gail". I will be here for Gail whenever she needs me. I will pray that she has the strength to get through this. I am sure she will as she has loads of friends and some family here. We send the immediate family our sympathy. Donna and Charles Sinclair

Gail, I'm sorry to hear we have lost Dr. Malmquist. I really enjoyed working with him the last 18 months (565 days!!) in the office on Silverada. He was always a gentleman and I can't drive by Bucks lake without remembering his love for the cabin. My sincerest condolences, June Austin

Ken was a special man, devoted to his family and his wife Gail. When in his medical practice he always put the patients needs first and never tried to please the insurance companies. He will be long remembered by all who knew him.
