Melvin J. Graham

Melvin J. Graham, known to most as Mel, passed away on October 7, 2014 at the age of 73. He was born October 1, 1941 in Tucker, Oklahoma, the son of Jessie and Bula (Moss) Graham, who raised him to be proud of his Cherokee heritage. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Air Force, in which he served for 4 years.

Following his stint in the Air Force, Mel took a job with the Southern Pacific Railroad in Roseville, California, where he also served with the volunteer fire department. In 1976 he relocated to Reno, where he continued his career with the Southern Pacific. He always enjoyed working with kids and animals, and put that passion to work as a 4H leader. He also took a great deal of pride in his role as a foster parent in Washoe County.

Mel was preceded in death by his son, Warren, as well as his parents and siblings. Survivors include his loving wife, Judy, and daughters, Yvette Clark and Paige Graham.

A Celebration of Mel's Life will take place on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at noon, at the Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Department, 11525 Red Rock Rd., Reno, NV 89508. The setting is appropriate, as Mel continued his dedication as a volunteer firefighter when he moved to Nevada.
