Robert McQueen Obituary

Dr. Robert McQueen

July 5, 1925

Dec. 23, 2012

Dr. Robert McQueen was born on July 5th, 1925, in Baltimore, Maryland to Beatrice Stockbridge and Robert G. McQueen. He was the fourth of five children: George, Dick, Jane, and Mary Guest. Robert and his family moved to Denver, Colorado in 1929. After completing the 11th grade at Denver's South High School, Robert moved to Portland, Oregon where, in 1943, he graduated from Lincoln High School.

With World War II then in full swing, Robert was inducted into the U.S. Army in November of 1943. Trained as an infantryman, he saw nearly two years of combat duty throughout the South West Pacific theatre, mainly in New Guinea and the Netherlands East Indies. He was discharged in April of 1946 with the rank of Sergeant.

In the summer of 1946, Robert enrolled at the University of Denver where he earned a BA in Psychology in 1949, and a Masters Degree in Psychology in 1950. While an undergraduate at Denver University, he married his South High School classmate, Shirley L. Pfeiffer.

Upon completing his Master's Degree, Robert served one year as an Instructor of Psychology at Idaho State College in 1950 and, the following year, as an Instructor of Psychology at Colorado State University. In 1952, he enrolled in the graduate school of the University of Texas, at Austin, to begin doctoral studies in Psychology. He received his Ph.D. degree in Psychology in 1955.

In the fall of 1955, Robert was appointed Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. He taught there until his retirement in 1990. During his 35 years at UNR he served in many capacities including Chairman of the Department of Psychology and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. However, he viewed as his most significant assignment that of Chairman of the Scholarships and Prizes Board, which he headed for some 30 years; and during which time he was instrumental in establishing many scholarships and endowments which continue to this day. In the years 1960 through 1970, Robert divided his time between teaching at UNR and the Nevada State Hospital, where he served as Chief Clinical Psychologist.

Robert's work in the Reno/Sparks community included service on the boards of the Boy Scouts of America, the Campfire Girls, the Sparks Recreation Commission, and the Salvation Army. Additionally, he helped found the Sparks Junior Baseball League and, for several years, he was coach of the 8 to 9 year old Papooses. Professionally, Robert helped with the legislation that established the Nevada Board of Psychological Examiners and, subsequently, served as its President for more than 20 years. He took special pride in holding Nevada Psychology License # 1 - a number, he liked to say, that "was easy to remember."

First appointed to the Washoe County Board of School Trustees in 1970, Robert was subsequently elected and re-elected to that Board for four additional terms. In 1980, Robert McQueen High School was named in his honor.

Robert and Shirley have three children: Daniel Carl, Katherine Gail, and Thomas Patrick. Shirley preceded Robert in death in November of 2012. Robert passed away on December 23, 2012. They are both greatly missed by their children.

A memorial service will be held for Robert on January 5, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sparks, Nevada - 2900 N. McCarran Blvd.

Bob and Shirley entrusted me to take care of their house on 2 occasions whilst on vacation, once to Mexico with the entire family. I took care of the garden and other plantings, as well as the house and their beloved St Bernard dog. It was one of first jobs outside my family and wanted to do a good job for them. They were very satisfied with my efforts, but more important, they gave a young boy a chance to prove to others, but even more so to himself that he could provide a service to others. I enjoyed the entire family's friendship for many years. My condolences to Dan, Kathy and Tom and may Bob and Shirley experience life everlasting! Sincerely Ralph Capurro and the rest of the Wedekind Capurro family.

Dan and family. We were so sorry to read about your fathers' passing. I loved talking with him when he would drive over in his golf cart. Especially hearing about his WW2 stories while serving in New Guinea. A great neighbor and friend. Larry and Sherry Cerfoglio

One of my fondest high school memories is of my friendship with Tom McQueen and of Dr. McQueen occasionally giving me a lift to school on the days he was driving Tom. Energetic and funny, he was always entertaining at that (or so I thought then) ungodly early hour. A few years later, I found as I took his spirited Psych 101 class at UNR that his humor, passion and energy extended to his subject and to the field of education. Now as an employee of Washoe County School District and the proud mother of a McQueen High School graduate, I would like to extend my thanks to him and his family for his tireless dedication to our community and to Washoe County School District. It was a privilege to know him. My most heartfelt condolences to the McQueen family.

Dr. McQueen taught Psychology by correspondence (and on campus) at the University of Nevada, Reno for more than 30 years, providing access to his Psychology classes for students around the state of Nevada who could not attend a campus class due to their geographic location, work schedule or other life commitments. He was a dedicated scholar and helped numerous students over his lifetime. I send my heartfelt sympathy to his entire family.

My son and I will always cherish the Time we spent with Uncle Robert and Aunt Shirley at the old "McQueen "cabin in Red Feather Lakes, Corado. We loved to hear about "his version" of family history. We will miss him.

"Thank you" are such small words to express how Dr. and Mrs. McQueen touched my life. I am forever grateful that he walked through my door 12 years ago, as he is one of those special people that will never leave my heart. God Bless you Sir.

Bob McQueen befriended my in 1970. His support and wise consul brought me and my family to Reno in 1981. Psychology in Nevada was greatly helped by Rob's initiating psychology licensing efforts with the legislature started professionalism of the profession. His exceptional reach of activities at UNR over a period of 35 years is unmatched.

I miss him and send his family my sincerest condolences.

Bob and I served on a Military Academy Nomination Board and he was always full of wit and had wisdom to share with other members of the board. His questions of the candidates were always direct, intelligent and illustrated his desire to have the best of the best go to an academy. I will miss him as I know his family will.
