Steven Hawkins Obituary

Steven Arthur Hawkins

Reno - Steven Arthur Hawkins, more fondly known as "Hawk" was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, Nevada to Marian and Glenn Hawkins on March 11, 1952. Whenever we talked about his birth his parents let us know that he was born during the week of Reno's 8th largest snowstorm in history, dumping 13.6 inches in one day. Much like the month he was born in, he may have come in like a lion with the storm, but he went out like a lamb. Hawk lived in Reno all of his life making him a true proud Renoite. He was the marble champion at Sierra Vista Elementary School, in the honor society at Trainer Junior High School and a tennis champ at Wooster High School in which he was offered a scholarship to play tennis for UNR. He was both academically and athletically talented, skiing gracefully on the slopes of Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain since the age of three, playing in city leagues for both softball and basketball into his late 40's, fishing at the crack of dawn at Pyramid and Eagle Lakes, competing in golf tournaments with dear friends (Bob and Duane) every year for 20 years, and playing "horse" with his girls, sons-in-laws, and whoever wanted to shoot some basketball. Hawk loved adventures and after 3 ½ years at UNR with a major in Biology, he took off sailing in the Caribbean with his Uncle Art for 9 months. When he returned, he proposed to his soulmate, Paula and they were married in 1977. During their 41 years of marriage they had two beautiful compassionate daughters, Kadie (McMullan) and Aimee (Cummins). Through them the family gained two supportive loving sons, Peter McMullan and Rich Cummins and finally, Hawk became "Pappy" to Sienna, Jerek, Elliot and Carlee. His career for over 30 years was with Shoshone/Swire Coca Cola, starting off as a delivery man and moving up to Sales Manager before retiring in 2006 due to health issues. He loved his co-workers and his job at Coke and in our family, Pepsi was taboo! He was always loyal to the company and the nectar of the Gods, he would say, was a diet coke. Hawk was intelligent, gentle, sweet, easy going, kind and a loving man who cherished his family and friends dearly. He loved the simple pleasures in life, like family gatherings, get togethers with dear friends, fishing, walking his dog, watching Jeopardy, reading suspense novels, and just hanging out! There isn't a person who didn't love and admire him. He passed away on January 6, 2019 after battling years of medical issues, leading up to liver transplant complications. He met those challenges, which were insurmountable to most with courage, dignity and kindness. His sister, Cheryl Hawkins, passed away in 1964 and he is survived by his sister, Janney Sims (Marv) and nephews, Brett and Grant from Colorado; sister-in-law, Danette Laca (Gary), niece and nephews; Staci Dooley (Dan), Michael Laca (Ashley), and Joe Laca. We would like to thank the doctors, nurses, PAs, CNAs and all those who touched his life these past three months at Intermountain Hospital in Murray, Utah. Locally, special thanks to Dr. Althausen, Dr. Duxbury, Dr. Matteoni, Mark and John from Hanger and Kindred Hospice Care. A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 2:00pm at the Saddle Ridge Club House at 3030 Bucephalus Parkway, Reno, NV. All longtime friends and family are invited. In honor of Hawk and who he was, he would love it if you paid forward one kind act to a stranger or someone you love and admire.

Thank you for letting me take care of Steve. He had such a tender part of my heart. He was always kind and patient even in the worst of times. My heart is broken. I loved him, his wife, and his two daughters. It was my pleasure sitting with them late in the night and talking. I pray for you and your family. Jessica Potter, NP

Hawk, there was nothing I wouldn't have done for you as your nurse. You are one of a kind and made us all want to go above and beyond.. reminding us why we all went into nursing and why we do what we do everyday. You're kindness was unmatched and your strength was never short of admirable. You fought a great fight and will be missed by so many. Sending Paula, the girls and everyone in your family so much love during this time.

I have never met a man like Steve and I don't expect to meet another. Kind, positive, down to earth, quick witted, funny, honest and in love with life, and his wife and family. My days were always better when Steve was part of them. I am blessed to have crossed paths with him. Soar Hawk...you are missed and loved.

I took care of Hawk while he was in the hospital it's hard hearing that a patient I have gotten so close with and his lovely wife and daughters has passed away. Hawk went through a lot in the hospital but he always managed to keep a smile on his face I admired that so much. The last thing I told Hawk was to always keep smiling and I know he is still smiling down at his beautiful family.

Dearest Hawkins family,

I'm so sorry to hear of his passing, I'm grateful that he is no longer suffering anymore agony. While carrying for him over the last few months I grew quite fond of all of you and I will miss running into you in the hall. Thank you for sharing him with us! I will forever be ingrained by him, its not often you meet such a humble, kind and gental soul.
Paula, and Kadie-
My fondest memory, was Christmas eve and your sweet family singing Christmas songs (we all cried) .
Fly high my friend, god speed!

Hawk was someone who always brought a smile with him wherever he went.
I was in high school when I first met Hawk, and thought he was such an incredible man, so excited that he and Paula started dating. I witnessed their love grow, and was so happy for them on their wedding day at beautiful Lake Tahoe.
I have so many memories of them together and am so blessed to have called him my friend.
His love for his family and love for life, even in the last few years with his medical condition, he never complained, and he will always be an inspiration to me. RIP sweet Hawk. You are greatly missed.
