Theodore Nigro Obituary

Theodore A. Nigro

Dec. 4, 1922

June 6, 2012

Theodore A. Nigro passed away peacefully in his home June 6, 2012 at the age of 89. Ted was well known and well respected in the banking community in Reno, and continued to work as executor/administrator for private citizens long after his retirement in 1985. He took his trustee responsibilities very seriously and had long-standing, personal relationships with his clients, remaining busy and active until ongoing heath issues forced him to "officially" retire last year. In his lifetime, Ted was a member of the Boy Scouts, Lion's Club, Better Business Bureau, Estate Planning Council, Executives Club, Orvis Foundation, Leonette Foundation, and the R.Z. Hawkins Foundation. He was a member of St. John's Presbyterian Church in Reno for over 40 years and served in many leadership roles.

Ted was born on his family olive ranch in Burson, Calaveras County, California on December 4, 1922. He attended the University of Berkeley in Pre-Med until the attack on Pearl Harbor, when he returned to the ranch to help with the business, and soon was drafted into the Army in 1943. Ted spent two years in England as a medical clerk, eventually helping with hospital set-up for the casualties of D-Day. He was set to go to the Pacific Theater when the war ended, and was discharged from the Army in 1946.

We will remember Ted as a dedicated patriarch, not only to his immediate family, but also to his extended family, a network of brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews scattered across the country. He loved to talk about them and share their lives and stories, and was proud of his Sicilian heritage. He often reminisced about the family olive oil business, lost during the years of the Depression. He loved food, wine, conversation, and cherished the connections and friendships he had made in his many years in Reno.

Ted met the love of his life, Connie Vannoy, in Santa Cruz where they both worked in banking. They married May 29, 1949, and recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary. Connie became a full time mother, raising six children. Ted always had the utmost love and respect for Connie and valued their partnership. He was preceded in death by his son, Roger; father, Frank, and mother Mabel (Hanson) Nigro; sisters Frances, and Carmella; brothers Dominic and Frank. He is survived by wife Connie; sons Gary (Debra), Bruce (Gayleen), John (Tracy); daughters Kathleen (Mike); Judy (Jenny); grandchildren Jessica Boyce, Weslie, Tyler and Anthony Nigro, Katherine and Benjamin Nigro-Gibson, Joshua Purdy and Haley McNeil; sister Lucy Elliot and brother Joseph Nigro. No services are planned.

The family invites you to leave a condolence message in the Book of Memories at the website www.waltonsfuneralhomes.com.

~ I'm Free ~

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free. I'm following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call. I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day,to laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found that place at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, ah yes, these things, I too, will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow: I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full; I've savored much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now; he set me free.

I had many happy memories over the years hanging with Uncle Ted and Aunt Connie and all of my cousins at their wonderful house on Williams in Reno. Sharon and I still treasure the dinner we had with Ted & Connie in Sacramento just a couple of years ago. Ted and my mom, his sister Carmella, were extremely close, and his presence was of great comfort to her before she passed away in 2005. Ted, you will be missed.

He was such a gentleman, and did so much for student nurses through the Orvis Foundation. He will be missed.

As President of the Nevada Opera Association, I want to send my thoughts and prayers to the Nigro family on behalf of our organization. Ted did so much to make Reno a better place to live. He touched so many lives and will be remembered for decades to come. He will be missed.

Ted hired me into banking, and we participated in many local trusts and foundations. The last time I saw him was at Albertson's, where he was shopping for whatever he was going to cook for Connie and himself.

At Security Bank, He, Ernie Martinelli, and Bob Capurro provided many Italian feasts.

Sorry there will be no services. We will miss his smiling face.
