Ethyle Sue Day

Ethyle Sue Day, 90, born May 31, 1935, passed away Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at The Center For Advanced Rehab at Parkside in Rossville, Ga.
Sue was raised just outside of and in Dayton, Tennessee, in Rhea County. At 16 Sue won the Miss Dayton beauty pageant. She was Co-Tennessee Tech Freshman Beauty in 1954. She graduated from Tennessee Tech with a B.S. in Home Economics in 1957. In the 1980's she went to UTC and continued her education.
Sue married Dean Thomas in 1959 and had two boys, Nick Thomas and Joe Thomas.
In Sue's adult life she lived in Chattanooga and then in LaFayette, GA in her later years.
Sue was emotionally intelligent and empathic from childhood. She gave of herself and especially to her children.
She was a great cook. She made holidays fantastic. She played great music in the house. She was warm.
She loved animals, having noted cats through the years and then dogs in her later years. One of her favorite quotes was: "Be the person your dog thinks you are." Unknown
She was accessible to everyone - especially to her children's friends to whom she became Mama Sue.
She loved to read, and always had a pen to underline and to make notes. It was said she couldn't read without a pen. She was also a great fan of The Andy Griffith Show, Gunsmoke and other westerns. She also loved classic, old movies.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph William "Bill" Day and Nella Mae (Fisher) Day of Dayton, and her two sisters Martha Jo Rutherford and La Nelle Norman.
She is survived by her sons Nick and Joe, four grandchildren, Jillian (Luke) Sumner, Christopher (Leonie) Baumgarten-Thomas, Kelsie (Jon) Wojcuich and Caeley (Jan) Thiessen, three great grandchildren Silas (Jillian), August (Kelsie) and one on the way (Caeley), by her nieces Robin Servo and Stacey Monday and her nephews, John Day Rutherford and Mack Norman.
What a woman.
