Roderick Leander Smith, III, age 89, left us on August 19, 2021 at home. He was the loving and devoted husband of Patricia Tully Smith who passed away on April 28, 2019. They met prior to that time eleven years before being married on January 22, 1955.  
In addition to joining his late wife, he leaves his son Roderick L. Smith, IV, three daughters, Kim Roberta Smith (Drapala), Pamela Jeanne Smith (Hill), and Jennifer Ann Smith (Hawkins). Seven grandchildren: Kellie Richmond, Laura Hill, Garrett Hill, Lindsey Hill, Steven Hawkins, Amanda Hawkins, and Patricia Hawkins. Eight great-grandchildren: Tucker, Luke, twins Carly and Elizabeth, Riley, Devin, Kenzie, and Kailee. He also leaves one niece, L. Michelle Smith of Washington, D.C. and one nephew, the late Douglas Smith, Jr.  
He was the son of the late Roderick L. Smith, Jr. and Stella Gladys Smith and the brother of the late Douglas F. Smith. He was born at Lying in Hospital in Providence. He graduated from North Kingstown High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean Conflict. After service, he entered into his father's plumbing and heating business, R.L. Smith & Sons. After retiring from the plumbing business, he became the North Kingstown Director of Water Supply for 12 years. He was also a call man on the North Kingstown Fire Department for 34 years and was the chairman of the committee that originally restored the old Washington No. 1 hand tub. In retirement, he and his wife purchased a motorhome and extensively traveled the country finding the best, a 3 month trip to Alaska in 2003. They then became "snowbirds" and seasonally lived in Naples, Florida and Wickford.  
He was a Communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Wickford. 
His Requiem Eucharist will be held Monday, August 30, 2021 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 55 Main Street, Wickford. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. Kindly omit flowers. Gifts in his memory may be made in his late wife's memory to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 will be appreciated.
