Nancy Kathleen Dossa- Sossavi of Rockville, Maryland (formerly State College, Pennsylvania) passed away peacefully August 5, 2021.
Born Nancy Kathleen Cartwright, she was raised in Ridgway Pennsylvania by her late parents, John and Margaret Cartwright. She attended Elk Country Christian School, and was a graduate of Villa Maria College. She married Dennis McCartin in 1968 and shared 4 children with him. They remained close friends throughout life and celebrated building an unconventional modern family.
In 1997 she married Edmond Dossa-Sossavi, and they lived in Benin, West Africa, for several years before relocating to Rockville Maryland with their two children. She worked until death for the National Institute of Health, and was passionate about her contribution and support to cancer research.
She is survived and celebrated by her husband Edmond and six children, John McCartin of Pittsburgh, PA, Heather McCartin (Storm) of Hershey, PA, Margaret McCartin (Rosenbaum) of Vienna, VA, Jamie McCartin (Wiza) of Oak Forest IL, John Paul Dossa-Sossavi of Rockville, MD, and Joyce Dossa-Sossavi of Rockville, Maryland. She is also celebrated by her beloved eight grandchildren, Ryan, Dustin, Jade, Addison, Brianna, Matthew, Melissa, and Sebastian. Cousins, Bob, and Mary as well as her children by marriage, Brandon, Michael, Greg, and Laila.
She is preceded in death by her parents John and Margaret Cartwright, and her best friend of over 70 years Sue Spiher.
Nancy loved classic movies, dancing, spending time with family and friends, and going to Mass. She attended St. Mary's Catholic Church of Rockville Maryland, but her spiritual home was found in her rosary and bible, which were always close by. She was a friend and honorary Mom to anyone she met, and social and civil rights advocate.
In lieu of flowers her family asks that donations be made to the Peace Corps, The American Heart Association
or the American Cancer Society
