Arnold Brock Obituary

Arnold Robert Brock

November 27, 1934 - March 22, 2025

Arnold Robert Brock, age 90, of Pawleys Island, SC, and formerly of Martinsville, VA, and Smith Mountain Lake, passed away on March 22, 2025. He was born on November 27, 1934, in Marion, IN, to Beatrice Cofell Brock and James Watson Brock. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, James Watson Brock and Frank Ervin Brock.

Affectionately known as Arnie, he was married to Virginia (Ginny) Prichard Brock for 67 years. They met at Indiana University, where he graduated in 1956 with a B.S. in Accounting with honors. He began his career as an auditor for Arthur Andersen (now Accenture) in Chicago, IL, while also serving periodically on active duty in the U.S. Army, continuing in the Army Reserves until 1963. In 1960, he became a certified public accountant and earned his MBA in Finance and Accounting from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He then joined Mead Corporation in Atlanta, GA, as Assistant Comptroller of the Packaging Division.

In 1965, Arnie accepted a position with American of Martinsville, a furniture company in Martinsville, VA, where he ultimately became Chief Financial Officer and Vice President. Known for his attention to detail and strong work ethic, he built lasting relationships with colleagues and friends. He also served as President of the Finance Division of the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association and was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, serving as President from 1973-74. His dedication extended to his faith community, where he was a deacon, elder, and longtime treasurer at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church in Martinsville. After a successful 29-year career at American of Martinsville, Arnie retired in 1995, and he and Ginny relocated to Smith Mountain Lake in 1996.

Arnie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who embodied love, loyalty, and a strong work ethic. His appreciation for nature and animals was evident throughout his life. In retirement, he remained active and engaged, cherishing time with his grandchildren, working on his property, and enjoying the company of friends and family. He and Ginny were members of Trinity Ecumenical Parish, where he served as recording treasurer for several years. He especially loved his years at Smith Mountain Lake, where he found joy in its peaceful surroundings and the time spent with loved ones.

Arnie is survived by his wife, Ginny; his daughter, Susan (Ford) Barton; granddaughters, Blaire and Katie Barton; his daughter, Carolyn (Price) Sloan; grandson, Price "Drew" Sloan; and granddaughters, Elizabeth and Katherine Sloan. Known as "PawPaw" to his grandchildren, his family was his greatest joy. His kindness, generosity, humor, and humility will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

To honor Arnie's memory, donations may be made to Trinity Ecumenical Parish, 40 Lakemount Dr., Moneta, VA 24121.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

To the Brock family. I am sorry to hear of Mr. Brock's passing. I never met Mr. Brock but had the distinct privilege of knowing Mrs. Ginny Brock. I was in two of her classes in high school. While I always thought Mrs. Brock was the sweetest teacher I ever had, she was also a great teacher and I learned so much in her Bachelor Living Class (which was so ahead of its time and the most practical and informative class I ever had. All the best to the Brock family during this tough time and a big hug to my favorite teacher ever, Mrs. Ginny Brock. Jeffrey Belcher, MHS Class of 1976.

Prayers to your family for your loss. My dad (James Anderson) worked with him at American of Martinsville for years. We lost my dad in 2021. Maybe they´re catching up in Heaven now. May God comfort you all during this time.

His kindness and caring for others was always evident with all of us who worked with him at American Furniture. He and Ginny were such a sweet couple.
