I joined the medical staff at Radford Community Hospital in 1968 as a pediatrician and was there until it closed in 2001. During much of that time every member of the medical staff had to take a call day in the emergency room and see any patient who came in without a personal physician. Nurse Barbara Alderman was a brightly shining light in that ER many times when I was called in on my assigned days, especially when I was called in for a problem not involving a child. She knew what needed to be done and she knew how to get a doctor in who was more trained in the problem at hand when one was needed. She was efficient, but compassionate and never grumpy.

Since then I have known Barbara as a friend and as a devoted "kitchen angel". We will miss her, but take comfort in the fact that she is free of pain and collecting the salvation she was promised.

Walking into the ER for a night shift always brought me a bit of uneasiness. You never knew if things would be somewhat calm and remain that way or would chaos rule the night. No matter, if my eyes fell on Barbara when I walked in, I knew that patients would get great care and I too would make it thru the night. Competent, conscientious, humorous and yet quietly stern enough to keep yours truly straight when needed – that was our Barbara. She was one of a kind.

As one of the many ER physicians "trained" by Mrs. Alderman, I can assure you that her acumen as a seasoned nurse, was equal to her outstanding and much appreciated cooking skills which insured that night shift teams kept up their momentum till day shift arrived. Mrs. Alderman was a much loved FORCE !
