David DeHart Obituary

David Wayne DeHart, 55, of Radford, Va., passed away on Monday, January 4, 2010, with his wife and brothers by his side. He was born on November 22, 1954, to the late Joseph W. and Louise T. DeHart. He was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Bertha Gordon. Surviving is his loving wife, Marian Osborne DeHart; son, James Michael DeHart; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph W. and Kim DeHart Jr., Steven DeHart, and Tony and Susan DeHart; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Trish Bender Osborne; sister and brother-in-law, Laura Osborne and Steven G. Kirk; brother-in-law, Joseph Alexander Osborne IV; niece and husband, Amy and Michael Watkins; nephews, Mathew, Andrew, and Eric DeHart; and great-nephew and niece, Wyatt and Tess Watkins.
David was a Radford, Va., native and resident and a 1974 graduate of Radford High School-where he played football and ran track under the Legendary Coach Lineburg. During his high school career he was a three-sport letterman in Football, Winter Track, and Spring Track winning 10 letters.
At Radford High School, David played on the nationally ranked football team during the 1971 and 1972 football seasons. The team had a 48 game winning streak and won the Virginia State AA Football Championship in 1971 and 1972. During those years at Radford High School, Va. Tech Coach Frank Beamer was David's position coach before leaving Radford and going to Maryland as a Graduate Assistant Coach.
David also ran on the Radford High School State Championship Track team and won both Indoor and Outdoor AA State championship in 1972 to 1973. David was the individual state indoor and runner-up outdoor Pole Vault champion in 1974, clearing 13.5 feet.
In the 1974 Virginia Tech football season, David walked on the team as a 5'9," 180 pound linebacker. In his sophomore season was moved to weak side (bandit) defensive end where he was a three-year letterman and started at defensive end his senior season. David was known as the smallest starting defensive end in Division I and probably still holds that title today. David finished his football career as a Virginia Tech graduate assistant defensive end coach under Bill Dooley and supporting Terry Don Phillips-who is now the AD at Clemson University.
David chose a career in banking after graduating from Virginia Tech and has 28 years of banking experience and was currently the Executive Vice President of Stellar One Bank managing the Commercial Division, Secondary Mortgage Division and Treasury Management Division for the Bank.

David was never anything but good to me. I realize it has been 10 years since his passing, but my knowledge of it is new. God bless you all, and know an additional prayer was sent.

We "ran away" in the third grade. He taught me how to "alley rally." The DeHart family took me in. David never spoke a cross word to me. He never failed to be a friend. He had his father's clarity of thought and his mother's compassion. With admiration, I will remember a strong young man who had the courage to raise the bar and the discipline to make himself reach.

January 14, 2010

Our community has lost a very special young man far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very difficult time. Tom & Katherine Martin, Radford

David was such a special person to everyone who came to know him, and I feel so lucky to have been one of those people. Although we met and became friends during our early years at Radford High School, some of my fondest memories are the summers during our college years when we worked together as counselors at the Summer Day Camp on Little River. Whether it was organizing football games with the kids, bouncing with them on the trampoline, "dunking them" in the river, or telling ghost stories around the campfire, he won the hearts of everyone, young and old. Unfortunately, as we "grew up" and went our separate ways, we lost touch with one another. But he never was and never will be forgotten. My heart goes out to all of his family. I know what a loss you must be feeling. I hope the memories of his amazing life and the comforting words and support from all of us who loved him will give you strength.

I am so sorry for your great loss. I have known David since we were kids in KB school together. David was truly one of the kindest boys and men I have ever known or ever will know. He always treated everyone so well and with much respect. I will miss him very much, but I count it one of my greatest blessings to have known him and have him as my friend. I look forward to seeing him again in Heaven. David's wife, son, brothers, and all of the rest of the family; as well as his many friends continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you all.

David had so many admirable and wonderful qualities as a person. Selfless immediately comes to mind; having no concern for self.

“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”

That was David Dehart, always thinking of and giving to others; sharing happiness as he touched our lives without concern for himself. May God be with Davids wife and son, Joe, Steve, Tony and their families, and with all of David friends during this difficult time.

With pain in my heart and a smile on my face, I remember the good ole days in "west end", KB, RHS & after. David was a special one-of-a-kind person and wow what an athlete!

Even though I moved away in the 80's, my life benefitted from knowing and being around him. He set a very high bar and will be dearly missed!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. We all have lost a rare gem. I personally feel honored and blessed to have been able to call him my friend.

David was a great friend and neighbor of mine in Stuarts Draft. He was always very loving and caring to me and my family. He used to carry hard candies in his pocket and would give them to our dog when she would wander over to his yard. I considered David to like a second Dad, he always told me if any man broke my heart they would have to deal with him :) David you will truly be missed and my thought and prayers are with the family.

I will never forget Dave. He was a special person who had a great sense of humor and a very big heart. I had the priviledge of working for him in the early 80's at branch of a Radford bank. When it was robbed at gunpoint, I will never forget how he immediately flew out the door to chase the the thief, who fled on foot. Even though he wasn't able to catch him, I still remember his courage to this day.

I also recall his generosity. He gave me an elephant's ear bulb, a favorite plant of his, several years ago after a discussion on gardening.

It saddens me so to hear of his passing. I offer my deepest sympathy to his wife, son, brothers and extended family.

January 6, 2010

I played foorball with Dave at Virginia Tech. He was the only guy there that I could literally see eye to eye. He was a tough competitor and a great inspiration to me. I will miss him greatly but I will never forget him.

No words can express my sadness today. Your wonderful family and Radford has lost a great son, brother, man and friend. My wish is for you to be comforted by sweet, happy memories and feel his love for you all as you heal. Rest in peace, David.

David was one of the nicest people I knew. He always wore a smile and had a great sense of humor. Our StellarOne family will miss him. I pray the family finds comfort in the days ahead.

I spent what seemed a lifetime with David at Kuhn Barnett and RHS, but now is just a blink of an eye. David was born with a natural charisma that drew people to him. His life is a testament to determination, hard work, and a positive attitude. He remembered faces and names and always had time for you. He will be missed, but he will be remembered.

David made an immediate impression on people with his positive can-do attitude. I considered David to be a friend, a banking partner (Stellar One/FNB, and before that Crestar), and a fellow Hokie. Rest in peace David.

My deepest sympathy goes out to all of David’s family. I know he touch many lives in the Central and South West Va. area. To me, David was a great guy, a friend, and simply put, he was a “winner”. He will be missed by the entire community.

Shocked to hear David passed away. Although I have not lived in Radford since college, it was a pleasure seeing David when in town or at our High School reunions. He was a good man and leader in the area, and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
