David Schroeder Obituary

David Roger Schroeder

November 5, 1950 - October 15, 2024

David Roger Schroeder, 73, of Blue Ridge, VA, left this life on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

Born in Richmond, VA, he was one of two children born to the late David Samual Schroeder and Lessie Miller Schroeder. He was also predeceased by his younger sister, Kay Robertson.

Roger's loving family includes his wife Shelia Newman Schroeder, to whom he was married for 41 fun-filled years; brothers-in-law, DeLoane Newman (Hariet) and Wayne Robertson (Joan); sister-in-law, Shelly Basham; father-in-law, Wayne Newman; three nieces; two nephews; and multiple great-nephews and great-nieces. The "Blonds" and "Brunettes" held a special place in his heart, always ready with a hug and eager to learn more about snakes and lizards. This generation will carry on Roger's legacy with a love and appreciation for all things in nature.

After graduating from Hermitage High School and then Virginia Tech, Roger worked for Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Framatone Nuclear Power Services. An arrowhead hunter, banjo picker, avid reader, hunter, and artist, Roger was a unique man that took great pleasure in enjoying the simple pleasures in life, like sitting on the porch with a good cigar watching wildlife and the seasons change.

While we mourn the loss of Roger, we also celebrate a wonderful life filled with love, adventure, and many good memories.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at The Train Station, 1402 South Jefferson Street, Roanoke, VA.

The family requests memorials, in honor of Roger, be sent to Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center of Roanoke, 5985 Coleman Road, Roanoke, VA 24018 or to your favorite charity. Condolences may be shared with his family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.

Sheila, I'm so sorry to hear of Roger's passing. You and Roger are a big part of why I love to garden to this day. I was the annoying neighbor kid who would show up out of the blue, and you all didn't seem to mind at all. In fact, you put me to work, and taught me how to do stone masonry. Some of my happiest childhood memories were helping in your yard. Thank you for the love you two showed me, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

I will miss you Roger. Thank you for letting me "borrow" my cartoon, childhood memory of you as Roger Klotz on the animated TV show called "DOUG!"

To Sheila and family, please accept my condolences on Roger´s passing. I graduated from Hermitage in 1969 and considered Roger one of my very good friends. He once took me on a spin on the back of his motorcycle, all around Richmond (and no helmet in those days!) He was a wonderful guy. I will say a prayer for him tonight.
