David Wynne Obituary

David Walton Wynne, 80, of Blacksburg, Va., died in his home on Sunday, September 21, 2008, after 12 years of living with cancer. Originally from Henderson, Ga., he is predeceased by his parents, Edra and Winnie Wynne; and a brother, Jack Wynne. He is survived by his sisters, Wynella Wynne Martin and her husband, Dean, and Margie Wynne Elkin, all of Forsyth, Ga.; and a brother, Michael King Wynne, of Fort Sill, Okla. David earned a BFA from the University of Georgia and an MA from Ohio State. He experienced the world while dancing throughout it as a modern dancer working with a host of legendary dance companies -the Charles Weidman Dance Theatre, Pearl Lang Dance Company, Juilliard Dance Theatre, and José Limon Dance Company. He was an Instructor of Dance History at Ohio State before moving to Blacksburg, Va., in 1976. He choreographed numerous productions for The Contemporary Dance Ensemble at Virginia Tech and at Glade Church. He was active in the community as a volunteer through Creative Arts Incorporated, Blacksburg Regional Arts Association, English as a Second Language, and numerous Fine Arts ministries of Glade Church. Because of his passion for the arts, David Wynne's family extended beyond his blood to his soul. Therefore, he is also predeceased by Jessie Burchess, Charles Weidman, Doris Humphrey, and José Limon – all of the Modern Dance Movement; visual artists, Nadine Allen and Alex Wind; and life artist, Susie Schulz. He is survived by his dancing soulmate, Billie Lepczyk; his visual arts soulmate, Larry Bechtel; his family, friends, and caregivers in Glade Church; and numerous other friends in the fine arts community locally and throughout the world – especially Lucy Venable of Ohio State University. A celebration of his remarkable life will be held 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2008, at Glade Church. The Rev. Kelly M. Sisson and members of the Va. Tech Dance Ensemble will be officiating. Community reception follows. For directions and information: gladeucc.org. David requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Glade Church, 1600 Glade Road, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg, Va.

Jerrie and I enjoyed your friendship and what you contributed to our lives, and community, very much - and gratefully for so many years. Jerrie cherished your love of plants and bonsai trees, and I learned much about Modern Dance from you that is of special value to me in the work I do today. Thank you for these gifts.
We will miss you.
