Doris Shea Obituary

Doris Brown (Dottie) Shea, 88, of Glade Hill, Va., and Naples, Fla., died peacefully on March 24, 2010. Born on July 6, 1921, in Glade Hill, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Julia (nee Metts) Brown. Dottie finished her undergraduate work at Randolph-Macon and Lynchburg College in Virginia and went on to receive her Masters degree from Columbia University. Like her mother, Julie, she was a school teacher for many years and later a Guidance Councilor. Since 1976 she had been an original resident of Vista Palms in the Lely development in Naples. Dottie spent summers at her home in Smith Mountain Lake, Va. She was a member of Lely Presbyterian Church in Naples, Fla., for over 30 years. An avid bridge player, she also enjoyed traveling. Dottie was an elegant, gracious, kind, patient, and compassionate lady who will be dearly missed. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Joy, and to her son-in-law, William Collins. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James W. Shea; daughter, Karen Brown Shea; brother, Wilbur Brown; and sister-in-law, Dora Brown. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Dottie's memory to Lely Presbyterian Church, 110 St. Andrews Blvd., Naples, Fla. 34113 or to Avow Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, Fla. 34105. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be conducted from Lynch Conner-Bowman Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, with Elder Junior Conner officiating. Interment will be private.
