Hello,
My name is Evan Maxey, of Maxey Seat Cover Center. My grandfather and father moved in to Mr. Bayses Esso Service station on Melrose and 24th St. after he moved. I was born in 1977 so all I remember is our family business being on that corner.
I wish Ive counted how many people have told me that our location used to be Eicky Bayse Esso. It happens so frequently, still, that I wanted to learn more about Mr. Bayse. I did learn he moved down the street from us to beside Roanoke Salem Plaza. It looks like someone is moving in to the old Exxon station now. First time Ive seen the doors open on that building for a long time.
The reason I write is to see if anyone will see this and share some memories of Mr. Bayse, his family and his business. Im actually trying to do the same thing for those that knew my family and business over the years. If you have something youd like to share, please email me at [email protected] or call our shop at 540-982-0888.
I know its been several years since his passing, but from what Ive heard, he sounds like a great person and someone I wish I had met.
Thank you,
Evan.
If you go to www.virginiaroom.org, you may find some old pictures of the area. I found a picture of Crobucks and up the street you can see the corner and the building has a large round sign. Most likely the Esso sign. We own the fire station next door now and there are some great photos of that. A couple have the Esso station in the background.

Dear Gary & Vicki,
I’m very sorry I missed the funeral! We don’t get the paper and I didn’t hear about U.Eckie’s passing until Saturday afternoon. I have some wonderful memories of him. He was always so kind to me, as well as helpful. Dad also loved and admired him very much. I know losing two other family members (Dad & U. Bill) recently was hard for you, but grandfather’s are very special and the hurt is deeper. I’m glad he is in Heaven with our Lord. May the love of Christ and His peace be with you and the rest of your family!
Love,
Mark & Debby

Our hearts go out to the Bayse family, and especially Bonnie with whom we both attended school at Forest Park Elementary, Monroe Jr. High and Jefferson High School (Class of 1960).
The Villa Heights Lions Club sponsored the sandlot football team we played for and my brother and I were very proud of the blue and gold jersey's we wore. Mr. Bayse, to a great extent, was responsible for that very positive event in our lives.
We remember walking by his Esso Station and he never failed to say hello, with a wave and he always had a smile for us.
Please accept our condolences and know that so many people you probably don't remember or even know thought he was a very special man. May God bless you all.

Dear Bayse family,
I remember Eicky on 24th street in the 50's and 60's. I would be in the car with mom or dad and we'd stop at Eicky's and he would ask, fill er up? My mom would say, if $3.00 will do it! In those days, $3 probably came close to filling er up. I think that ESSO must have been a gathering place because when I was with my dad (IKE Altizer) we would usually stay longer! I also remember Steve with the motorcycle with all the lights. He would sometimes give me or my twin brother a ride home from Forest Park school. Those were good days and i always think of them whenever i'm in that area. My depest sympathy to your family.

Dear Edith,
I am so very sorry for the loss of your husband, Ed. He was a wonderful man. Sarah loved her step-grandpa and will remember him with much love. He is now resting with God after a life well lived.
