Elizabeth Flowers Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Rogers Flowers

December 23, 1925 - November 9, 2025

Blacksburg, VA

Elizabeth (Betty) Rogers Flowers, 99, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2025, at her home.

She was born December 23, 1925, in Spartanburg, S.C. to the late A.L. and Lillie Parris Rogers. Mrs. Flowers graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in English and a B.S. in Library Science and loved all things "Carolina Blue". As proud as she was of her alma mater, she often said that the best thing she left UNC with was her husband, the late Dr. W.L. (Bill) Flowers, Jr., whom she met at a campus Baptist Student Association event. She was a devoted wife and mother as they journeyed through life together with stops in Chapel Hill and New Bern, N.C. before finally settling in Blacksburg. Mrs. Flowers was a faithful member of the Church on Main (formerly Blacksburg Baptist Church) and active in numerous community events. She cared deeply for people and was generous with her time and resources to all that were in need. A few of her favorite activities were caring for the "toddlers" during Sunday church services, working at Montgomery County Regional Library, being a teacher's aide at Harding Avenue Elementary School, and volunteering at the Blacksburg InterFaith Food Pantry.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Woodrow and Bill; sisters, Dot and Catherine; and a granddaughter, Brittany Gatterdam.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Gatterdam; three sons, Billy (Lynn), Lee (Susan) and Luke (Rhonda); six grandchildren, Ryan Gatterdam (Logan), A.J., Lucas, Trent, Joshua, and Jordan Flowers; and two great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Brady Gatterdam.

The family would like to thank all her caregivers and friends that allowed her to transition to her eternal life on her own terms and at home. A special note of gratitude to all her neighbors, past and present, in the Apperson Park subdivision. She greatly cherished your kindness and friendship, especially during the past month. They were truly one of the blessings that she experienced in this life and, be sure, that even though she can no longer walk with you in the morning and evening, her spirit will be with you.

In keeping with Mrs. Flowers' wishes, formal services are not planned and, in lieu of flowers, if you wish, please make donations to a cause close to your heart.

My condolences to all of Betty's family members. I enjoyed working with Betty for many years at MFRL. One particular happy memory is doing inventory with her at the library. We were working in teams and she and I made up one team. This was back in the day before automation. It was such a pleasure working with Betty and we made it enjoyable. Many good memories of Betty and she will be missed.
