To the Sutpin family: I am a mother of twin boys, one of which is a police officer. You must be so proud of your son knowing the kind of person he was to all of you. I lost a good friend of 16 years last September, a police officer also, age 41. I will pray to the Lord to give you all the strength you will need to bear with this loss...Keep close and never forget, as those are the memories that will give you strength to make it through a day when you don't feel you will...

Eric Sutphin was one of the best friends I ever had. It was a pleasure to work, and to just be around him. He always kept me laughing and kept me on my toes with his one liners. He had a way about him that you could never get enough of him. If you were ever feeling down, he always had a way of cheering you up. Eric, you will be missed beyond belief. I served with then Sergeant Sutphin in the United States Army, 572D Military Police Company, at Fort Ritchie, Maryland. I remember him for always being upbeat, laughing, or making others laugh, and for his Southern Virginia accent. I remember him as a good Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO).

Sgt Sutphin, as I knew him, will be missed. I wish I had known we were both in Virginia.

It's just a piece of elastic, really. A piece of black cloth that barely weighs an ounce. But when added to a 5-pointed star, feels like 20 pounds has been added to your chest. Placed over your heart as a temporary outward symbol of a permanent memory. And even when the elastic comes off, Eric, you will not be forgotten. Thank you for all you gave.

Words cannot express how I feel. Thank you for your service and unselfish sacrifice. You truly gave all. You were a great Deputy Sheriff and asset to the Department. I will always remember your smile and greetings in the office prior to roll call and our talks at the rescue squad building. Mrs. Sutphin and family- Eric was such a great inspiration to me. He came back to the sheriff's office right after I started 3 years ago. Eric was a great man, a hero, and a great father. We both got promoted to Corporal at the same time and ended up working the same shift rotation. He was always there to make you laugh and have a good time. We all know that Eric is in a better place. May God continue to bless your family and help remind us of all great memories we all had with him.

You and yours are in my thoughts. I was a Maryland State Police communcations operator for 14 years and this was always my greatest fear each day as I sat down at the radio. I prayed each day for my guys to come back safely at shift change time. My condolences to your family and to the police family who will also miss him. I am so terribly sorry for your loss. That sad Monday morning was the first day of college for my son Daniel, a freshman at VaTech. Daniel has spent his entire life in Atlanta, and it is comforting to know that he is joining a community where people truly care about one another and there are brave individuals, such as Eric, whom have always put the safety of others first. The void left from losing a brother and comrade in Law Enforcement is a hard load to carry. I can't imagine how much deeper and harder the pain is for you to lose your soul mate and dad. Eric became my Corporal only a few months ago, but the amount I learned from him will last a lifetime. I also had the pleasure of working with Eric when he first came to our office several years ago and was on his shift when he valiantly apprehended a suspect who had also killed a fellow officer, after being wounded himself. As a deputy, he exemplified what professional means and as a family man he should be an example for everyone to follow. He was always happy no matter how tired he was and was never short on one liners or jokes. I thank God that Eric got to spend a great vacation with his wife and daughters in Disneyworld this summer. Those memories will hopefully give them hope as they attempt to move on. I thank God also that he got to talk to his mom one last time shortly before he was killed. Eric loved police work, lived for police work, and would not give up until the bad guy was caught. Ultimately, he laid his life down for us and caught the bad guy. As a shift we will never be the same, as an office we will never be the same, his family will never be the same, but we will work hard to never forget what a hero Eric was, and follow his motto: "It's time to go do some real police work!" God bless you my friend I will miss you forever.

Cpl Sutphin is a hero in every sense of the word. CNN took time to broadcast his bravery on a day when other world and national news were demanding attention (Iraq, Iran, JonBenet story, etc.) This alone is an example of the impact his life has had on his community.

To the Sutphin Family - When I received the news that Eric had died in the line of duty I could not believe it. I quickly contacted the Captain at the Charlottesville Police Department to verify this information. Eric and I were partners at the Charlottesville Police Department and we became good friends over a short period of time. We both loved our work on the midnight shift. Any time a serious call came in we both would back up any officer in a heart beat. I'm very sorry for your loss, Eric was a great guy and a friend and I will truely miss him. I know that you are suffering through a terrible time with the sudden death of Eric. My Thoughts and Prayers are with you. May God Bless you and may Eric rest in Peace.
