Eric Sutphin was one of the best friends I ever had. It was a pleasure to work, and to just be around him. He always kept me laughing and kept me on my toes with his one liners. He had a way about him that you could never get enough of him. If you were ever feeling down, he always had a way of cheering you up. Eric, you will be missed beyond belief. Words can't express how I or anybody else feels over the loss. I will see you again BROTHER, keep the angels laughing, and save me a mansion beside yours. GOD bless you and your family. Everyone of you are LOVED, and CHERISHED.

I served with then Sergeant Sutphin in the United States Army, 572D Military Police Company, at Fort Ritchie, Maryland. I remember him for always being upbeat, laughing, or making others laugh, and for his Southern Virginia accent. I remember him as a good Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO).

Some of the old "Mountain Moles" of the 572d have a MSN Group and I'll post this Guest Book link on the Group. I can be reached at: [email protected]

Sgt Sutphin, as I knew him, will be missed. I wish I had known we were both in Virginia.

It's just a piece of elastic, really. A piece of black cloth that barely weighs an ounce. But when added to a 5-pointed star, feels like 20 pounds has been added to your chest. Placed over your heart as a temporary outward symbol of a permanent memory. And even when the elastic comes off, Eric, you will not be forgotten. Thank you for all you gave.

I wish I knew it would get easier but I feel it will only get more tolerable. You were a true friend and I will miss you but I will never forget you. Mrs. Sutphin and family- Eric was such a great inspiration to me. He came back to the sheriff's office right after I started 3 years ago. Eric was a great man, a hero, and a great father. We both got promoted to Corporal at the same time and ended up working the same shift rotation. He was always there to make you laugh and have a good time. We all know that Eric is in a better place. May God continue to bless your family and help remind us of all great memories we all had with him.

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. That sad Monday morning was the first day of college for my son Daniel, a freshman at VaTech. Daniel has spent his entire life in Atlanta, and it is comforting to know that he is joining a community where people truly care about one another and there are brave individuals, such as Eric, whom have always put the safety of others first. While I cannot begin to imagine the pain your family and community is going through, I want to say thank you to the Blacksburg, Christiansburg and all other communities, citizens and police involved in watching out for my son, and in the end, making the ultimate sacrifice.

The void left from losing a brother and comrade in Law Enforcement is a hard load to carry. I can't imagine how much deeper and harder the pain is for you to lose your soul mate and dad. In times like this we have to remember that God is in control and He doesn't make mistakes. He will give your family as well Eric's LEO family the strength to carry on. God gave Eric a talent and love for serving others and it showed in his dedication to his work. It was a true joy to know and work with such a dedicated professional. You are in my prayers daily.

To Eric's Mother - As a mother of two boys I can't say that I know what you are going through but I can tell you that my heart aches for the pain and the void that you must feel at this time. Turn to the one that knows your pain because he had a son to die for a senseless act of violence also. There is no one that knows your hurt more than he. To Eric's Family and his friends from MCSO.

When the first entry was add to the guest book on the 21th. I added a entry myself. I set a icon on my dest top so I could keep up with things that was said about Eric. This is a very special man and like so many other I felt deep sadness for his death. The more I read however, the more I felt he would want us to smile also. the ones like myself just know about this sad part. So when I read the entry this morning from Michelle Smith. That everyone had a "Eric's" story. I wonder would you share with us.

from someone who would like to know the Eric that laugh and was happy.

God Bless his family and his friends

Tamara, Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. We all truly loved Eric. He was the kind of person that made your day a little brighter just by stopping by. He always had a solution for every problem, no matter how silly his answer might be. We will miss his smiling face and his humor around the office. I think everyone has their favorite 'Eric' story, as he touched every one of us in our own special way. Please know that I am here for you and the girls for whatever you may need, any time of the day or night. If you need someone to talk to or someone to just sit with, please give me a call. I would be honored to help you. I know how much you meant to Eric and I know he would want us to watch out for you and the girls. Eric became my Corporal only a few months ago, but the amount I learned from him will last a lifetime. I also had the pleasure of working with Eric when he first came to our office several years ago and was on his shift when he valiantly apprehended a suspect who had also killed a fellow officer, after being wounded himself. As a deputy, he exemplified what professional means and as a family man he should be an example for everyone to follow. He was always happy no matter how tired he was and was never short on one liners or jokes. I thank God that Eric got to spend a great vacation with his wife and daughters in Disneyworld this summer. Those memories will hopefully give them hope as they attempt to move on. I thank God also that he got to talk to his mom one last time shortly before he was killed. Eric loved police work, lived for police work, and would not give up until the bad guy was caught. Ultimately, he laid his life down for us and caught the bad guy. As a shift we will never be the same, as an office we will never be the same, his family will never be the same, but we will work hard to never forget what a hero Eric was, and follow his motto: "It's time to go do some real police work!" God bless you my friend I will miss you forever.

Mrs. Sutphin, please accept my sincerest sympathy in the loss of your husband. My heart goes out to you as you must try to deal with your loss, as well as help your young daughters deal with theirs.

Emily & Rachel: Never forget that your dad was, and still is a hero. He will always live in your hearts.

To the members of the MCSO: I'm sorry for your loss, as well. You are all heroes. "Heroes are not made by the way that they die, but by the way that they live their lives." You put your lives on the line every day, and in my book, that makes you a hero.

Mrs. Sutphin and the MCSO: Lean on each other for support. You will need each other for a long time to come. Just because Eric is gone from this Earth does not mean that you are all not still family.

God Bless You All.

Tamara and girls,

I am a former deputy of MCSO and my husband is still an MCSO deputy. Both of us feel blessed that we had the opportunity to know and work with Eric.

Please read the entries in this guest book. See that they come from people near and people far and know that while you have lost Eric, you will never ever be alone.

MCSO, the community, the commonwealth, the entire nation and parts of the world have come here to let you know that we were all touched by Eric and that we are all here for you. We appreciate the sacrifice that Eric made. We appreciate you. If you need a task around the house completed, a babysitter, a hug or just a friend to sip tea with and chat, call on us. Any of us. We are just a phone call or email away and are absolutely, unconditionally here for you.

Blessings to you.

To the Sutphin Family - When I received the news that Eric had died in the line of duty I could not believe it. I quickly contacted the Captain at the Charlottesville Police Department to verify this information. Eric and I were partners at the Charlottesville Police Department and we became good friends over a short period of time. We both loved our work on the midnight shift. Every day my children and I hold hand at the table to pray before each meal. In our prayers, we ask God to bless those who sacrifice their lives daily to help others, and for their families to have the courage to cope. Your husband is one of those for whom we prayed, without even knowing him. And now we pray at the table once again for you and your family, to have courage and strength to deal with this tremendous loss. I too, have lost a husband, and only time and faith, along with love and support of those around you, can help you deal with this tradgedy. May God be with you and yours.
