Evelyn Foster Henderson

June 1, 1928 - May 4, 2021

Evelyn Foster Henderson, 92, a longtime resident of Brandon Oaks in Roanoke, Virginia, died on Tuesday, May 4, 2021.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 1, 1928 to Dr. Gurdon Robert Foster Sr. and Anita Ruth Aiken Foster, she spent some time in the rural area of McDonough, Georgia, where she still has a beloved family.

Upon graduation from McDonough High School, where Evelyn was president of her class, she attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia graduating with a B.A. in Art History in 1949. Following that, Evelyn studied art for a year at the University of Georgia. For a brief period, she worked at Retail Credit Company. During that time, Evelyn met her beloved husband of 67 years, U.V. Henderson Jr., at Druid Hills Presbyterian Church where they were married in 1951.

Their first child, Beth, was born in Bethesda Naval Hospital in 1955, followed by Nancy in 1957 in Richmond, Virginia, where they lived for 20 years. During that time, they were very active members of Bon Air Presbyterian Church, where they served in many capacities, as they did in other churches over the years including Arlington, Virginia, Port Arthur, Texas, Poughkeepsie, New York, and Roanoke, Virginia. In each place, she and her husband enjoyed singing in choirs.

Her most memorable volunteer activity was teaching at an institution for young delinquent boys in Richmond. She and her husband also very much enjoyed reading for the visually handicapped on the radio for over 20 years.

At an early age, she had become interested in drawing and painting and had taken courses with private instructors and at the High Art Museum in Atlanta. In time, her major focus became portraiture (mainly pastels) and over her lifetime she did a little over 300 portraits.

Her husband's employment with Texaco, Inc. provided them with opportunities to travel to many parts of the world as well as the United States which they greatly enjoyed. After U.V.'s retirement they continued to enjoy world travel. She was a member of Chapter BD, P.E.O., and a study group in Roanoke called Fortnightly.

Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, U.V. Henderson Jr.; her parents; and her brother, Dr. Gurdon Robert Foster Jr., also of McDonough.

She is survived by her daughter, Beth Lewis (husband, Van), and their children, Jayne Bond (husband, Dustin) and great-grandchild, Harrison Bond, Kathryn Ranney (husband, Carleton), and Benjamin Lewis; and daughter, Nancy Jones (husband, David) and their children, Rebekah and Sean.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 18, 2021, at Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Ave., SW, Roanoke, Va. Anyone who might wish to honor her memory could consider a gift to the Brandon Oaks Residents Endowment Fund or to a charity of their choice. I knew UV and Evelyn from Bon Air Presbyterian Church in Richmond, VA. They were such good people and always active in many programs of the church. I missed them when they moved north, and I'm truly sorry for family and friends who miss them now that they are both at Home with God. Blessings, healing, peace to you all. May you carry their spirits always, and spread them to others!
