Frederick Wright Obituary

Frederick G. "Bud" Wright

December 2, 1927 - February 23, 2025

Frederick G. "Bud" Wright, 97, of Roanoke, VA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

Bud was a lifelong and faithful member of Ghent Grace Brethren Church, where he sang in the choir and served as a trustee. A proud veteran, he honorably served in the United States Navy for two years aboard the U.S.S. Fargo.

His professional career spanned 38 years with C&P Telephone Company and AT&T, where he was a dedicated employee and an active leader, serving as an officer for many years in the Communication Workers of America. Bud was also deeply committed to his community, serving on the Board of the Roanoke Chapter of the American Red Cross, and on the board of the United Way. He also served on the Board of the Private Industry Council of the Fifth District Employment and Training Consortium and the Executive Board of the Roanoke United Central Labor Council. In retirement, he generously gave his time as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, continuing his lifelong dedication to service. Bud enjoyed sports and competing and was a champion bowler with many trophies. He played tennis, ping pong and basketball, and was an avid golfer up until he passed. He played with the Roanoke Telephone Golf Association for over 50 years and was a longtime member of the Hanging Rock Golf Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 58 years, Betty; and his six siblings.

Bud is survived by his loving children, Bud Wright Jr. (Kate), Danny Wright (Cynthia), Peggy Smorodin (Dave), and Greg Wright (Kathy); eight cherished grandchildren; 10 adored great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Terra Bella for their compassionate care over the past two years.

A visitation for Bud will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Oakey's South Chapel. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 2 p.m., at Oakey's South Chapel followed by a burial at Sherwood Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Bud's memory to Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, or First Tee, Roanoke Valley. Online condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.

Bud Wright was a good Christian who loved our Savior, a wonderful man, and a very dear old friend of mine through out my life, from my early childhood until he was called Home. He also was a dear friend to my family. I am sure they are all rejoicing to be together again. He will be missed.

Buddy a wonderful ,funny, fit, uncle the Wright family had during his long like. He was a bodysurfer until 10 years ago. He was still playing golf up until 2024. He was the life of the party. He loved to dance and going out to eat. He will be missed by all the family, God got another angel that will make the angels laugh,
