Glenwood Carrol Toms, beloved husband, father and friend, passed from his mortal life on Saturday, April 19, 2025. He was 93 years old.

Glen was preceded in death by his biological parents, Daniel and Ada Toms; his foster parents, John William and Cora Lee Fitzgerald Taylor; and many siblings.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Janet C. Toms; son, Willis Toms; daughters, Carol Toms (Linda Gallihugh) and Lori Barrett (John Barrett), and three grandsons, David Barrett, Cole Barrett and Jaxen Toms.

Glen was born in Charlottesville, VA. As a child, he resided in Covesville, VA, and attended and graduated from Miller School of Albemarle in Crozet. As a young man, Glen enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he soon met and married the love of his life, Janet. Glen served for 20 years as a jet fighter mechanic, service which included two Vietnam tours, and assignments to Japan, Philippines and Texas, among other places. Glen retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant and moved with his family to Virginia. He worked in HVAC at the VA Medical Center in Salem for many years until his retirement.

In addition to the love of his family, Glen was beloved by many friends, including his church families. He had first been ordained as a deacon at Schertz Baptist Church in Texas, and later served as deacon at First Baptist Church in Roanoke. More recently, at Grandin Court Baptist Church in Roanoke, Glen was a member of the choir and served on the building committee.

Glen had a very outgoing personality, and never met a stranger. He was an avid golfer and he enjoyed working with tools. He could fix anything from the kitchen sink to the car, and also displayed a great deal of talent with woodworking projects.

Glen is already very much missed by family and friends and his beloved Shih Tzu, Dixie. His faith in the Lord has earned him his eternal reward in Heaven, which is a great comfort to those who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be held at Oakey's South Chapel on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 5 until 7 p.m. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Grandin Court Baptist Church with Dr. Kevin Meadows officiating.
