He was a member of the Roanoke Bi-Racial Committee that spear headed the Valley's peaceful integration and was awarded the Noel C. Taylor Humanitarian Award in 2000. He headed the Roanoke Valley Development Corp., which turned the American Viscose property into the Roanoke Industrial Center. He served on the State Board for Community Colleges, becoming Chairman. He was also Chairman of the State Board for Higher Education in Virginia. After being instrumental in the creation of North Cross School, he served as Chairman of its Board for 16 years. Also, among his many honors, he was named Cultural laureate of Virginia in 1992. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the loving care of his caregivers, Cindy Campbell, Sara Mullen, Vickie Wolfe, Sharon Reese and Darlene McDowell, as well as the staff of the South Roanoke Nursing Home. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Entombment was private. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this most difficult time. My father, John Roche, always considered it a blessing to move to Roanoke to work for Mr. Willis. He was always so kind to my family and supportive to me as I pursued my degree in education. Mr. Willis will certainly be missed but always remembered. May God bless all of you and keep you in his loving care.

I did not know Mr Willis personally, but my uncle was Carroll Bayne Manley, who worked with Mr Willis for many years, and I lived in Hunting Hills for a few years before moving out of state, and so I feel it only right to extend my sympathies to the family. May God bless all of you.

Gordon was a true mentor to me througout my career as a builder here in the Roanoke Valley. A man of majestic integrity and vision that I was honored to know and learn from....As you enter the life triumphant you are a shining example of "well done my good and loyal servant" for you certainly left this area much better than you found it for all who live nad work here.

I was a corporate pilot for Mr.Willis's company in the early 80's and had the opportunity to fly him and his family members many times. He was always a gracious, kind and respectful gentlemen to me and to all his business associates who travelled with him. My condolences to his family and close friends.

Our sympathy to your family. Our mother, Laurie Janney was also at SRNH and occasionally talked with Gordon while sitting on the back terrace. She died on the 27th of November. Gordon left quite a legacy and was a gracious man to the end

Gordon was a great man and I considered him a good friend. If it were not for Gordon, The Virginia Tech Smart Road would not exist: VTTI, the largest research institute at Virginia Tech would have had a very different history. Gordon worked closely with Steve Musslewhite and Dickie Cranwell to bring it to the CTB's attention.

Words cannot begin to expressd the loss of a loved one. Gordon has been one of the most loving, caring gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure to know as well as care for. I have so many wonderful memories. We have laughed, danced, (which he loved so well) and had so many "board meetings together" . He will continue to stay in my heart for eternity. My love goes to Jean and all of the family.
