Helen Davis Obituary

Helen Frances Davis, 73, of 3202 Meadowbrook Drive, Blacksburg, Va., died on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at Montgomery Regional Hospital from lung cancer. She was the wife of Edward (Bill) R. Davis Jr. Frances and Bill were married on February 3, 1953. Frances was born in Montgomery County on September 29, 1936, to the late Virginia Caldwell Stanger and the late John Alexander Stanger. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Nola C. Kloke.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children and their spouses, Charlene (Mike) Crews, of Lynchburg, Va., Steve (Melissa) Davis, of Gladys, Va., Ron (Diane) Davis, of Katy, Texas, and Gary (Sally) Davis, of Radford, Va.; grandchildren, Jennifer (Ronnie) Jones, Kelly Davis, Cody Davis, Cory Davis, Lindsay Layne, Ryan Johnson, Kayla Johnson, and Carter Davis; great-grandchildren, Grace Jones, Addison Jones, and Alexis Jones; her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Walter Simpkins, of Blacksburg, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, George and Katie Stanger, of Christiansburg, Va.; aunt, Edna (Don) Taylor, of Poquoson, Va.; nieces and nephews, Jim (Freda) Simpkins, David (Yan Ju) Simpkins, Patricia (Dan) Cummings, John (Pat) Kloke, Jim (Denise) Kloke, and Karen (Keith) Ballard; and best friend, Judy Price.
She was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church, Blacksburg. Also, Frances had been a longtime employee of Poly-Scientific Corporation until 1989.
She spent the last 15 years of her life traveling around the United States and the world to as many destinations as her "traveling buddies" would agree to accompany her. Frances loved life and wanted to make sure that she didn't miss an opportunity to see and/or experience the world. She was also a wonderful cook and prepared "home cooked" meals for the family until cancer stopped her. She loved Mexican food and ice cream. In addition, she read the comics' section of the newspaper every day and watched "The Price is Right" and "Let's Make a Deal."
Frances enjoyed going to dinner theaters, Broadway shows and country music concerts. She thoroughly enjoyed the senior aerobics class and the friendships she developed. Frances loved to go sledding with the grandchildren which also inspired her to collect snowmen. Also, she was a fiercely protective and involved mother, grandmother (MAM-MAW), and greatgrandmother. She never missed an opportunity to attend events or recognize and acknowledge each person's accomplishments.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Karanita Ojomo, Dr. Harry McCoy and the staff at Montgomery Regional Hospital, especially Brad and Dannielle.
The celebration of Frances' life will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2010, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gina Rhea, First Christian Church, Radford, and the Rev. Linda Dickerson, Northside Presbyterian Church, Blacksburg, conducting the service. Interment will immediately follow in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. Visitation will be held at McCoy Funeral Home on Friday, August 6, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m.

I have such fond memories of Helen and her chipper good morning as she rushes in to say hi. She always spoke so fondly of everyone. Each of her family and friends were so near and dear to her heart. We will all miss her. Thank you for allowing me to spend some time with her.
