Henry Hampton Bowyer

Henry Hampton Bowyer, 94, of Moneta, died Monday, April 14, 2008, in Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born January 12, 1914, in Bedford County, a son of the late Robert L. and Effie B. Bowyer. Henry served his country in the United States Army in the early 1930's. He was CCC in Bastain, Va. He retired from the U.S. Government as a foreman. Henry resided in the Washington, D.C. area for 40 years before returning to Bedford in 1988. He was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Lucy D. Bowyer; two brothers, George W. "Nelson" Bowyer and Landon R. Hogan; and two sisters, Betty T. Hogan and Elsie B. Welch. He is survived by two sons, Robert H. Bowyer (Pat), of Hot Springs, Ark., and Charles H. Bowyer, of Arlington, Va.; one brother, Wesley O. Bowyer, of Arlington, Va.; three sisters, Rachel B. Schultz, of College Park, Md., Edna B. King, of Bedford, and Joyce B. Heaton, of Satellite City, Fla.; four grandchildren, Cheryl A. Bowyer ,of Richmond, Chris E. Bowyer (Amy), of McLeansville, N.C., Tracy B. McMillan (Dan), of Centreville, Va., and Peter H. Bowyer, of Manassas, Va.; and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of Henry's life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, 2008, in the Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gary T. Fowler officiating.
